I hear gay people (usually men) calling themselves faggots all the time. But just a few years ago I remember how much hate the word generally invoked.

Is faggot becoming the new "nigga", and what are your thoughts on how quickly it's become acceptable (if at all, and to what degree) compared to how quickly "nigga" became acceptable.

I think both the N word and the F word are used with pusillanimous intent even when spoken in jest. (unless you're a nigger or a faggot.)

faggot sounds pretty hateful to me,
for some reason if I hear someone say fag though it doesn't sound as bad to me :shrug:

a few days ago at work two customers (both old men) got in somekind of quarrel while in my check out line, when one of the guys left the other yelled quite loud: "what did you say?! you faggot!"
it was silent after that :lol:

I wanted to call the guy out kinda for using the word, but that would risk me maybe losing my job

Nigger is a little more extreme than faggot. Faggot or fag is usually used as a meaningless insult. I don't usually hear it being used in a way that makes sense. Plus it's almost as fun to say as fucker. I think it's that f sound.

I agree mikeytro... perhaps because "fag" broadly implies the speaker carries a 'we've become comfortable with the word, it's been around long enough and is now a dull blade that isn't as hurtful' mentality, whereas 'faggot' carries more of a 'fresh from the womb of hate' vibe?

Just a thought... either way I'm more interested in the peculiarity of hateful terms whose street definitions are in transitional phases, and what some of the effects of it might be during that phase.
