Only positive side-effects!   I noticed that my energy increased dramatically, I slept better, I lost weight without restricting calories, the firmness/tone of my body improved, my aerobic endurance increased, and my mood was more stable.

I do recommend stocking your pantry and fridge beforehand, so that you always have something good to eat.  Feeling deprived is very discouraging.  "The pH Miracle" details a shopping list, which can be a great jump-start in making the switch, and it also details a gradual transition plan from the Standard American Diet to a highly-nutritious vegan diet.

Well I don't plan on buying a book, which why I was hoping for some personalized info from some vegans on this board(for stuff such as a rough shopping lists, tips for getting started, and such)

I do appreciate the bit of personal advice and tips you have gave though.

So you didn't notice any negative effects during the transitional period hey?

I just felt so hungry when trying it.  I was drinking lots of water and constantly snacking on fruit and veggies and my stomach was just aching after the 5th day.  I never get headaches and was getting some annoying ones during this 1 week I refrained from meat, dairy and just ate vegetables, fruits, homemade vegetable soup and bread/cereal.  I felt aggitated and weak.

I've read this can happen when such suddenly changing your diet like I did, but even after 6 days it wasn't ceasing, so I don't know

It sounds like you weren't getting enough protein or fat. You'll need to include legumes, nuts, seeds & oils in your diet. A diet based entirely on grains, veggies & fruits is insufficient.

Here are some great links for the detailed info. you're looking for:

Well my soup I made had all sorts of crap in it, in large amounts. Beans, peas, small pasta noodles, spinach, unsalted vegetable juice, tomatoes, celery, carrots, artichoke, rice and a little bit of corn. I ate so much of that soup. Beans and peas are a legume right?

I didn't eat any nuts or seeds though. But I also ate a little bit of salmon(cooked with extra virgin oil).

When I wasn't eating my soup, snacking on freshly cut vegetables(green peppers, tomatoes, carrots, broccoli and red peppers) and fruit(pineapple, honeydew melon, another kind of melon I can't think of(green), watermelon and purple grapes), I was having the odd piece of toast(expensive whole grain crap) or cereal.

So I lasted for 7 days and had a small portion of fish for dinner on two of those nights and the rest of time was eating my homemade soup, fruit, vegetables, vegetable and fruit juice(no additives, natural stuff), rice and whole grain toast...

...and it's not good enough? I was having upwards of 3-4 bowls of that soup a day along with all my snacking on vegetables and fruit. I had quite a few red kidney beans and green peas in it. Still not enough intake of legumes?

I'm not a big fan of nuts and seeds though

You may have gotten enough protein from the beans/peas in the soup, but it still sounds like your diet was too low in fat. Add in some healthy oils (hemp, flax, olive, grapeseed, coconut), and some nut butter on your whole grain toast, and you'd probably feel much less hungry & more energetic.

Were you withdrawing from caffeine and/or sugar while on this diet? That could explain the headache & restless feeling. It can take a few weeks to stabilize your blood sugar when you switch from a junk food diet to one that is 100% nutritious. Seven days just wasn't long enough for your system to purge the junk & establish equilibrium.

Check out the links I've posted, plan your diet accordingly, and give yourself at least 3 weeks to detox before you make up your mind about the effects of your diet change.

Actually yes.  I did this 7 day diet as a detox of sorts.  Lots of fluids and everything else fruits, veggies and everything else I described.  The whole idea was to "purge" the junk.  I'm usually a really frequent, somewhat heavy drinker.  Before that experiment, I ate a fair amount of junkfood(I'd snack on chips here and there daily, pop/with and without caffiene, granola bars(the ones loaded with sugar), sugar cereals/fruit loops, cinnamon toast crunch, etc and whatnot.  I don't eat chocolate or anything, but I'd say there was a good amount of sugar in my diet.

And doesn't alcohol interact with insulin in some way, in a significant way?

I also ate cheese by the pounds....man, i have a cheese problem...sooo good.

So I was drinking every day at the time, so that was hard enough.

My body was withdrawling on alcohol, sugar, cheese, milk, meat and pretty much everything.  It was a very drastic 7 day change, but was meant to be.  Like I said, I've read that it can be expected for effects such as I experienced to happen within the first few days, but by the 7th day it wasn't letting up

this is why I'm looking to slowly(not ridiculously slow) into a more vegetable and fruits kind of diet.

I rarely drink soda anymore.  I actually really enjoy my fruit juices much more.  I'm not drinking everyday thank god.  But I like to snack on potato chips and I love my cheese(in the past week I haven't really had any though).  So I am making some effort.

I've eaten a lot of meat this week...had a steak 3 nights in a row and it was DAMN good.  But I kind of want to limit myself to one small steak or some fish once a month or something.

Who knows though, if I'm eating the way you and other vegans are eating, 29 days out of the month, I might not enjoy the taste of meat like I do now.  My opinion could change after such a change in my diet.

I do doubt it though, but I won't know until I try

I'm mostly vegetarian and I stay perfectly healthy on a diet of...

oats
vegetables
beans
pasta
bread
olive oil (a good amount every day)
cheese

I do also eat tuna fish once a week or every 2 weeks and take a multivitamin.

It does take a while for your body to adjust to going without animal fat and protein. At first you will crave it because your body is used to it, and you may not feel right. This only lasts a couple weeks at most and eventually you will feel much better than you did eating meat. e.g. You won't get tired after meals anymore.

Have you ever heard of the "blood type" diet? It is based on the idea that different blood types react to foods in different ways. Some blood types would do poorly on an all vegetarian diet, while others may flourish. This could possibly be the key to your dietary problems. There is more info about this theory at:

While interesting, the "blood type" diet hypothesis is simply not supported by the preponderance of the research into nutrition. A vegetarian diet produces the lowest rates of cancer, heart disease, stroke, etc...in all blood types.

Having been vegetarian for many years before ever having heard of the blood type diet, i do agree it that it is most probably the healthiest lifestyle anyone can adopt. I do however think there is some truth in the blood type diet. Like the assertation that different stomachs have different acid contents- which affects the easiness of meat digestion. I have also learned some valuable tips on being a healthier vegetarian from Dr. D'Adamo ( I'll pass along to EllisDSox that substituting Tempeh for meat does wonders) So i'd say that the blood type diet is worth looking into whether or not you "belive" in it or not or follow it strictly. I think that anyone checking out vegetarianism would benefit from reading the" type A" info, which is really a good guide to balanced vegetarianism- you can take the wierd food restrictions they give you with a grain of salt, so to say

i really have no idea about any transitioning period into vegetarianism as i've been a vegetarian all my life, however, like you i have trouble keeping myself 'full'.
try nuts & seeds, granola, rice, pasta, oatmeal, or tofu... they're are all pretty filling. fruits and vegetables just don't seem to work, i could eat them all day and never be satisfied.
