Outdoor Cultivation. Can I apply a casing layer late?
    #7106638 -

Hey guys,
I spawned Texans to 12sq/ft of an outdoor bed exactly two weeks ago yesterday. To my surprise, I found my first pins yesterday afternoon and applied my first layer of DE. When I awoke this morning, the pins had been consumed by some little critters.

My question is, can I apply a layer of wood chips, or 50/50 material to cover the bed and prevent all these little pests from chilling on the mycelium? I wasn't aware that I needed to case an outdoor bed that was 6 inches thick. With pins slowly surfacing now, I need to know if I can apply something to protect the manure from pests.

Answers would be greatly appreciated from those with experience outdoors. I am willing to send giant prints of these texans to those with advice.

Thanks again. Save my babies.

In order to tell you how to battle your pests it would be much easier to see pics of them or if you know what they are, just let us know. In my outdoor growing experience I've had problems with snails actually eating my fruits, most other critters seem to leave the fruits alone and feast in the soil surrounding the mycellium. If snails is your problem, theres a simple solution. Snails love beer! If you get a deep plastic dish with straight sides fill it halfway with beer and bury it so that the top of it is almost flush with the ground. The snails (I've found also roaches) will emerge themselves in the beer or get down to the level and once they get drunk they'll either fall in and drown or be too drunk to get out of it and drown.

As far as a casing layer I'm not sure what you mean? If your doing an outdoor grow shouldn't your mycellium be underground already? Either way if its above ground or uncovered I don't think a small layer of soil/verm would help, the bugs would simply dig thru it. I have heard of mulch working, which kind tho, is beyond my knowledge. I simply dig a small hole (10inches max) and wide/long enough to bury my colonized grain or pf cake and put a layer 50% Vermiculite 50% MGMC(miracle grow moisture control). Then just water until you get fruits. I've had great results with this, even with contaminated grain/cake.

Hope this was some help, if snails or roaches isn't your problem try to figure out what is, that would be ideal for anyone to recommend a treatment.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT SPRAY WITH ANY PESTICIDE

I'd love a print if thats possible, like I said if you can identify the pests for me I could really give you a lot more input, snails and roaches are some of the most common in my area (Florida)

On a typical morning, there are spiders, flies, roly-polies, and small gnats and various flying creatures. Considering I laid a fresh layer of DE last night, I cannot consider snails or slugs as culprits at this moment.

My sense is that the flies, etc. are feeding on the exposed manure itself. The bed is laid in ground, six inches deep, and was layered with manure, worm casting, vermiculite, and spawn. It is watered via soaker hose, but I'm finding that the bed itself is evaporating a lot of moisture during the day and night, thus defeating the purpose of the DE itself.

I just figured if I put a 1/2 inch layer of 50/50 on it this afternoon, then the flies may not be too prone to hang around anymore, and I may not lose as much moisture, this ruining freshly laid DE.

Keep em coming! There are alot of pins here!

The beer method works well on rolly-pollys as well. I've found that they don't mess with the fruits too much, they like the mycellium. From my observation anyway. For moisture, adding more vermiculite would defiantly help.

How many times a day are you watering your grow?

What are the temperatures like in your area?

Your referring to Diatomaious Earth correct? I've heard that this itself can attract certain pests.

Did you pasteurize your manure?

Once a day, in the morning, from below the bed.

80-90 degrees daily.

I wasn't aware that Diatomacious Earth attracted pests, but I've read many old hands swearing by it over the last 4 years.

I didn't pasteurize my manure, because I'm growing outdoors.

I could be wrong about the DE attracting pests, if the old hands swear by it, then it must be good. I've never used it myself honestly. Thats about the temps I get here, I usually water 3 times a day. If you think you aren't achieving the correct moisture I would add in another watering, perhaps during the hottest time of the day between 12-3.

I know that most of the teks say you don't need to pasteurize but I do, to avoid the pest problem. Because the smell alone will attract lots of flying insects. The easiest way to do this is just to get your poo, put it inside a pillow case. Get a nice big Styrofoam cooler and weight the poo down at the bottom so it wont float. Boil enough water to submerge the poo bag. Once you hit the boiling point, throw the water into the cooler and stick the top on and seal it. Then just allow it to cool by itself. TADAAA the poo is now pasteurized and that will eliminate a lot of the pest problems. Try this maybe during your next outdoor grow. It should help, I found this was my biggest factor in eliminating the pest problem associated with outdoor growing.

TRY THIS:

If you can go out to your local plant nursery pick up a eucalyptus tree. Usually you have to buy a tree but you may be able to find a smaller one. Or if you can grab 10 or so leaves without anyone noticing. Eucalyptus is an all natural amazing bug repellent. Grind the leaves up into a paste and mix water into it and keep that around your grow area, this should stop almost all pest activity.

I hope this helped, I've used this method numerous times and its great. Kind of my little secret thing but hey anything for the shroomites.

Best thing for flies is a fly bait but make sure you put it away from your grow as it will attract flies. The beer for slugs and snails is a tried and true method. I have also heard a piece of cantaloupe nearby might draw them away but have not done this personally yet.
