Purpose of oyster shell
    #7104147 -

What exactly is the purpose of adding crushed oyster shell to the casing mix?

I read somewhere that it does the same thing as calcium carbonate. If thats the case why do some casing teks tell you to add crushed oyster shell + calcium carbonate/hydrated lime.

Oyster shell releases calcium a lot slower than some other forms of calcium. I usually powder mine before use.
When I was young, I would go out to an abandoned grape orchard to steal grapes for winemaking where I would find oyster shells all over the place, yet I was no where near the ocean..?? This is something I could never figure out until just recently. Now I assume the farmer put them there to balance out the soil ph. If he would of just put down powdered calcium it would of leach through the soil years ago.

Crushed oyster shell does hardly anything. It simply does not break down quickly enough to be much use in a casing mix. However, powdered oyster shell or "oyster flour" works like a charm. It is great at keeping the PH levels stabilized over the entire life of a grow.

I am a total noob.

What I am stating is what I have read, as of late, during my learning curve re: mycology.

Oyster shell offers fast release (powder), slow release (chunky) pH balancing. Chunky oyster shell also aids in harvesting, in that it's aggregate nature mitigates damage to the casing.

So, for my first grow, which is also 7 brf cakes turned into 5 casings, the casing mix is 60/40 verm/coir. My dirty little secret: That I added 30% Coarse oyster shell (from a 50lb bag of chicken feed) rather than the recommended 15%

My logic is that the powdery oyster shell will substitute the calcium carbonate that I did not have. So far all seems pretty good for a first everything.

Also, I really liked the concept that oyster shell chunks mitigates casing damage, and so when I doubled the qty for my casing mix, I did notice a chunkier 60/40 verm/coir casing layer. Perhaps I am biased, however.

I intend to repeat this casing recipe in order to test fate and experience.

Wish me luck,

Red.
