Will "Crushed Coral" work in place of crushed oyster shells / calcium carbonate? (Pics)
    #3514654 - 12/17/04 07:33 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

I got some stuff called Florida Crushed Coral, it says the following on the package.
*High Strontium - Up to 7 times more naturally occurring strontium than other brands
*Maintains Proper PH - unsurpassed in buffering ability, over 30 times more soluble than dolomite.
*High Sphericity = resists packing, channeling, and the formation of anaerobic "dead spots".
*Natural Fractal Surface Area = [porous structure, combined with aragonite and high magnesium calcite microcrystalline content, provides up to %40 more surface area in the 1 to 10 Micron range ( The domain of nitrifying bacteria). This also results in better bacterial adhesion.

Here is a pic of the bag.

Will this stuff work in a casing soil of coir/verm, as well as crushed oyster shells? The coir's ph is 5.9 - 6.7, and the verm is netral. I think salt sea water maintains about 8 so this should raise the pH right?

There's nothing magical about oyster shells. You could use clam shells, or snail shells, or egg shells, or chalk, or sedimentary rock....

What these things have in common is that they are ph neutral and acid attacks them. They, in turn, neutralize the acid. If there is no acid, they do nothing. Put some egg shells in a jar of vinegar and seal it. Wait a week or so. The egg shells will be thinner. Taste the vinegar. It tastes like water. The acid is gone.

You can use lime, but then you have to use an exact amount. It's a base, which is sort of the opposite of an acid. You could in theory use lye if you got the measurement just right. The beauty of using a buffer instead of a base is that it works like a thermostat. It only goes into action if it's needed. No worries if you dump in too much oyster shell.

You had better have a GOOD Ph TESTER..........
If you use HYDRATED LIME......
It is HOT enough TO BURN YOUR SKIN OFF.
But, once you learn HOW to use it

Can large amounts of calcium carbonate in water feel warm and tingly? I swear I feel my hands and forearms getting tingly once I put it in... I've always wondered if it was this or possibly the coir? I know its not the verm and really dont think its the coir since theres nothing to it..could be my head too...

When an acid hits a buffer it will fizz. That would explain the tingly feeling. I don't believe that the reaction is exothermic. Are you sure that the temperature goes up?

yes, and as Agar said, it can burn your skin, I learned this quickly in the
concrete industry, the burn isnt just a caustic action, there is a physical
rise in temperature.

I'm a noob too. Best to pay attention when guys like Prisoner#1 say something. The coral would make an interesting side experiment, but I wouldn't bet the ranch on it. Best to stay on the yellow brick road when first starting out. JMO

OK...there seems to be quite some confusion....cause the people don't bother to read the FAQ!
What you want is either Calcium carbonate or Agricultural limestone.
If you have a pH tester, you can also use Calcium hydroxide.

Read http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23684 and http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23455 .
