Lime? Oyster shells?
    #4654418 - 09/13/05 12:45 PM (12 years, 15 days ago)

Hey folks...I went searching today for some crushed oyster shells(calcium carbonate, right??)...for my 50verm/50peat casing mix. I will be casing 6 trays, each tray is 6" wide and 12" long. Casing depth will be half inch..

Anyway after 4 stores I ended up at Lowe's. They didn't carry any either, but... they had this Garden Lime, which said it was safer than hydrated lime and was 52% calcium carbonate.

I'm sure lime will work, but what kinda' volume(%) of my casing mix will I want with this? Also it is pelletized, would it be better if I crushed it up into a powder? See the two pics below...

Looks like a high magnesium content, I think that is bad, not sure though.

I'm not exactly sure. But I do know you can get hydrated lime and oyster shell and such from a shroomery sponsor. I think it is www.mycosupply.com

Good luck

Yeah, that would also be a good idea. You could try pet stores. But that website could be an option also. Nice shroom shot Black_Dragon. I take it you are a fan of Tupac?

Too much magnesium.. Not good for your mushies. you want less that 2% magnesium.

An easy casing mix is Jiffy Mix:

It comes pH balanced already with peat moss, perlite and lime. This is what I used to case my double tub I have going now:

As you can see, it works pretty damn good and you can get it at most Walmart/Kmart type stores.

go to the vitamin section of any store look on the back of calcium bottles find one that says "as calcium carbonate" put those in a blender when you turn blender on the pills will explode and turn into powder, this is all I use but be carfull you only need a little this stuff has a high content.

I didn't even sterilize this batch of Jiffy Mix. I just sprayed water with a little peroxide mixed in when I cased it.  For some reason, it seems like a get contams when I DO sterilize it...weird
