i want a small truck with good gas mileage.
    #7079251 -

i've currently got an '89 nissan maxima. It's a bit of a p.o.s., and the gas mileage is surprisingly bad (i can't be getting more than like 19 miles to the gallon with it, if even). Now, I got the car because my dad got the hookup real cheap several years back when i was still in high school, but now i'd like something a bit more practical.

I don't know jack shit about cars, so i'm hoping you guys can give me suggestions. I want a small pick-up truck that's likely to get at least the same fuel consumption that my maxima's got, hopefully better. Nothing brand new. I'd prefer something at least 10 years or older, because of cost.

so can you help me out? any particular makes or models to look for?

Well don't be expecting to get any better than 19mpg on a pickup, small or not unless you go for an extremely weak 4cyl or small diesel.

i thought about diesel, for the potential to go bio-diesel. would you happen to know of any small diesel pickups off the top of you head?

okay, so i did a bit of googling. it appears that while small diesel pickups may be rather common throughout the world, they're rather uncommon here in the states. of course, why would any red blooded american want a small, practical, fuel-efficient pickup? why it's blasphemous!

The only ones I'm aware of are the Isuzu Pup and Volkswagen Rabbit. I think Toyota might have made one in the early 80's as well.

vw rabbit? that's a car, isn't it? i actually know a guy with a diesel rabbit.

i've found a pretty nifty site. www.fueleconomy.gov you can check the economy of any specific make/model, or you can just go through a list of all the say "small pickup trucks" from any specific year. turns out in the mid 80s, there were several small diesel pickups, including a version of the chevy s10, the ford ranger, an isuzu one, a nissan one, maybe more.

it's rather depressing to watch the trend though, because in the mid 80s... 20 fucking years ago, there were a substantial number of small diesel pickups that got anywhere from 20-35(!) miles to the gallon. but as recently as 2003, the most fuel efficient was the chevy s10 with 19 city, 25 hwy. That's 20 years later.. 20 years later and the goddamn thing is no more fuel efficient? it sickens and depresses me.

i'd love to get a diesel, but they seem uncommon. though now that i know what to look for, i'll keep my eyes open.

my dad gets back from the middle east in a few months, and he knows all kinds of characters that deal with cars, so i'm sure he'll help me out once he's back.

Caddy debuts Internationally as a Rabbit

The Caddy came into fruition when VW was experimenting with Golf derivatives, a wagon and a pick up.

VW of America was interested in the pick up, when VW released the Caddy it first was produced at the VW Westmoreland County plant in Pennsylvania from 1979 to 1982.

It was known in North America as the VW Rabbit Pickup with trim levels such as LX, and Sportruck.
