Bio-Diesel & 4x4 questions
    #3991612 -

OK all you Earth friendly 4x4ing hippies, I got a question for you.

This summer, I am planning on converting a 4x4 diesel van into a bio-diesel burning machine. I am under the impression that there are kits manufactured that allow you to simply pour filtered vegetable oil into your tank without refining it.

I would appreciate any information about these kits you have, including, but not limited to price, efficiency, life expectancy, ease of instillation, etc.

Also, another longer term project in the works, more of a brain storm really, at this point of time, is to convert my early 90's front wheel drive 2.2l sohc honda into a raised 4x4 machine. White trash rice rocket. Hells yeah.

Peace

Yeah, I know one place where I could get 20 or so gallons a week from. I probably won't even be living in this town by the time I get that van converted, so I'm not really worried about that end of it yet. I wish I had a place to keep the stuff I can get for free in the mean time, though. That way, by the time the conversion was done, I'd have enough for a little road trip. Oh, well.

I was looking at that 200 gallon nomad system on greasel and it looks pretty cool, but for what it really is, it seems you could build something on your own alot cheaper. I'm still snooping around the internet looking into renewable fuel sources and different techniques available.

Apparently, the new jeep liberty will have a diesel as an option that can burn veggie oil.

Fords are supposed to be good diesel engines to convert. If I can't find an econoline van with the powerstroke engine, I'll probably wind up with a extended cap pickup with a camper shell.

using actual bio-diesel, you don't need to make any mods at all

if you are just using frier grease, you may need a kit

our buses run on bio-diesel here so there are a few pumps around, but its spendy

In the states, I'm pretty surre that it is ILLEGAL to sell straight bio-diesel without some level of petroleum products in it. They sell diesel in my county that has bio-diesel as a small additive(around 5% I think) portion of the fuel.

The more I learn about renewable fuel sources, the more surprised I am that I don't see more cars on the road burning something other than the overpriced stuff the gas stations are selling us.

So to take a stock diesel van and turn it into a veggie oil burnin' 4x4 is about a 12k conversion. I don't think I'll be paying anyone to convert a 2wd vehicle into a 4wd seeing as a pickup is almost as practical for my applications. I would probably get better fuel economy, as well.

The cost to convert my jap car to 4x4 would be greater than the current value of the vehicle.

I think my best bet is to sell the little jap car and buy myself a solid 4x4 diesel pickup, unless I stumble across a van w/ 4x4 and diesel in my price bracket, which I am yet to do.

We'll see what happens over the course of the next few months. I'm keepin' my eye out for the right vehicle for me over at ebay.
