Children and Dinosaurs
    #7067330 -

I'm sure I'm not the only one to notice this phenomenon. What is it with children and dinosaurs? It seems like every child(except possibly those in creationist families) goes through that dinosaur phase, where they are absolutely fascinated with these ancient beasts. Why does this fascination seem to be so universal? Perhaps there is some innate desire in us to reconnect with the past.

When I was 8, my brother was eaten by one and then I took a keen interest. Damn you, sauropod!

Because they are actual real "monsters", but they can no longer hurt them because they are all dead....(?)

I was already in middle school when Jurassic Park came out. I assure you it had nothing to do with my interest in dinosaurs as a kid.

Because you can put a peter pan action figure in a T-Rex toy mouth and go Argent make it bit it?

I think it's because they hold to the realm of fairytale, of fabulous, epic.

When I was in grade 1 I totally wanted to be a paleontologist. I'm pretty sure it was all about the epic grandeur. They seemed magical and mysterious but also totally real. The fact that they actually once existed in the real world but were simultaneously so incredibly unlike anything that exists now...

ps- Lakefingers, that poem is incredible.

I've had this same discussion with my friends numerous times. From age 5 to about 11 or 12, I was deeply enthralled with dinosaurs. Almost every toy was a dinosaur, I had a taped special about dinosaurs I watched religiously every week, and I dragged my parents to the museum at least every other month. As I got to 8 or so, I read about dinosaurs like crazy.

The child in me is still in love with dinosaurs and I hope to god that one day they find a way to recreate them ala Jurassic Park. I would give anything to be able to see dinosaurs in real life.

Perhaps inhabited a dinosaur body long ago? Maybe fascinated with what the Earth was like before there were no dinosaurs?

Interestingly, about the time dinosaurs went extinct there is a layer of the Earth's crust called the KT layer and there is no other "layer" like it anywhere else in Earth's crust that has been located. It corresponds to 65-75 million years ago and whatever it was resulted in the extinction of dinosaurs (and who knows what else) on this planet. There is also a BBC radio documentary somewhere on the net and scientists discuss their thoughts on the KT boundary.

From livingcosmos.com:

"About 65 million years ago some event took place that wiped out more than half of all life on Earth. In addition to this mass extinction there was a major face-lift for the Earth as a planet. The continents were shoved to new locations, and inland seas moved on and off the continents, as major ridge expansion took place, particularly in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. In the process there was major mountain building, volcanic eruptions, and some places sunk beneath the sea, while others rose from the sea. There is evidence of massive destabilization of the oceans and atmosphere. Powerful storms wrecked havoc as indicated by vigorous erosion and greatly increased continental weathering. Some elements, known as isotopes, show drastic shifts in abundance. Masses of sand, clay, and mud deposited layers everywhere, while other areas show missing sedimentary layers. The oceans show rapid desalination events, temperature transitions, and chemical changes."

According to one controversial theory (allegedly contained in the confidential scriptures of a controversial religion), this is when a percentage of the beings currently on Earth were brought here and "disposed of" with some violence. But then it is just a theory.

LOL. True, true. They are some of the cooler creatures to roam Earth. It must have been quite a planet back then.

Interestingly, some dinosaurs had to evolve/grow a second brain elsewhere in the body because it took too long for the nerve impulses to travel through those massive bodies.

Nerve impulses travel about 10 ft per second and so it took as long as 13 seconds + to get from the tail to the head of some. Too long of a delay when you are being violently torn to shreds by a shrieking, or cooing, Pterodactyl.

It's because they've been duped by Satan and his federal funding to believe in one of God's easiest pranks, thus rending their souls eternally unto the dark one.

That, or because they're totally awesome.

its not universal, just common.

I was OBSESSED with dinosaurs for a few years very early in my life. Before i could speak english i had a fairly complex personal language for naming dinosaurs.

Rargo-rars were carnivores like trex, rargo-kaw-kaws were flying dinosaurs like pterandon and pterasaurs, and rargo-eees were sea dinosaurs like icthyasaurs and mesosaurs.

I heard one theory which is that children like dinosaurs because they represent a power vastly greater then the power of their parents, who control them.

Hey guys listen up,

when I was younger I went to the beach with my friend and his brother. We were playing with some toy dinosaurs and having an amazing time with the waves. But lo and behold the waves took a few of the toys away, so we went out wading to find them.

Now, we almost captured one but it got away.

While I was looking for another something brushed aside my leg. Hmm, what was that? I look down and see that it was nothing less than a shark. Maybe about 2-3 feet big.

So I say Hey! Get out of the water there's a shark! To my friends brother and he so he gets out of the water and I'm like telling my parents There's a shark in the water! There's a shark in the water!

And they are like, okay whatever........ they didn't believe me.

I'm still not sure if my friend believes me that this happened however his brother seems to.
