I disagree. There's a lack in good mainstream music. underground/alternative shit has rarely been better than it has been in the last ~15 years IMO.

Music that is played on the radio, MTV, etc., music that is easily accesible and widely consumed. Underground (Indie? fuck, I hate these terms) tends to be more challenging/complex and therefore less popular.

Radiohead- Amnesiac (just cause I first heard it tripping on shrooms for my first time... amazing)

The Smashing Pumpkins- hard to say, I'm a HUGE fan, but for first time listening... Gish or Siamese Dream

Don't get confused... Outerspace is a group of their own, and the album is JMT Present: Outerspace. Don't give credit to JMT when Outerspace really deserves most of it.

Thanks to OMR I'm now going to have to add Interpol's Turn on the Bright Lights to my suggestions.

I'd also like to add McCoy Tyner's Supertrios and John Coltrane's A Love Supreme and Joshua Redman's Momentum. Jazz albums, give it a shot even if it's not your thing.

Could not agree more. :thumbup:
The majority of my friends stick to a few bands... Soundgarden and Smashing Pumpkins, or Deftones and Slipknot, and they all claim that music is totally dead.  I'd hate to be them, man.  To me like the past few years have been like a Golden Age of Music.  2006 I bought around 25-30 albums that I will never stop listening to.
Seems like it's just getting better and better.  If you don't agree, either you aren't digging deep enough, or you have my friends' problem: you have placed a filter on yourself.  Why be a fan of a few artists?  Be a fan of art.

For the sake of the topic, I'll recommend Converge's You Fail Me, but believe me, it will take you several listens to enjoy it.  Very much an acquired taste.  The most challenging CD I've ever encountered; it took me somewhere in the vicinity of 20-40 listens, even after loving their previous album Jane Doe, but today YFM is one of my all-time favorites.  If only I could get my friends to agree..
