there will always be some amount of failure when you're starting up. that is how you will learn. every grower starts following a tek 100% and then based on his real options he/she starts to add his/her own things to the grow to fit the optimal conditions.

I'm not sure what that means. You *NEVER* truly sterilize anything in this hobby, save perhaps the flamed needle tip, a spore print surface, etc. It's always just keeping the contaminant numbers very low; since rice has few endospores, boiling alone will do the job pretty much as well.
