drinknig alcohol is cheaper. u get 750 ml for 4$, rubbing alcohol costs 1 $ for 100 ml. it just sounds the better choice if it does the same trick. i think i am mistaking rubbing alcohol for medical alcohol.... whats rubbing alcohol used for? (excuse me - im not from around) anyway - if lysol kills all, how come in gloveboxs u fill the air with lysol and then expose the mycellium to all that lysol...mmm... i dont understand. a growin original

rubbing alcohol is used for killing germs, basically. you can find it at the grocery store. I got a bottle of rubbing alcohol for .29 cents on sale at Giant Eagle(chain grocery store by me). i think you're better off just buying rubbing alcohol with "isophoryl" <----- thats spelled wrong, but if you see it you'll know what im talking about.

Isopropyl alcohol only cost like $1.50 for 946 ml here, you're probably mistaken on some part. Though, maybe your location is a lot different... Rubbing alcohol and drinking alcohol are not interchangable, rubbing alcohol will kill you or at least 'produce serious gastric disturbances if taken internally'.

rubbing alcohol= isopropyl alcohol drinking alcohol=ethyl alcohol (ethanol, EtOH) They both do the trick. use whichever is cheaer. People don't use ethanol for wounds and stuff cuz it would have to be taxed in the US if you sold it at the drug store, plus you would have to be twenty one to get it. The labs add something to lab-grade ethanol so that you can't drink it and it can't be taxed. That ups the price a little. Lysol is mostly Ethanol w some other stuff in it. If you come across something called Zephrin chloride (brand name not chemical) grab that!! That will kill everything better than lysol or tactical nukes. you can also use bleach solutions. I think 1% bleach will work, but I use 10% to sterilize counter tops and stuff. That's way cheap.

Ethyl (drinking) alcohol at 70% solution is a great, fast drying surface disinfectant, however it kills fragile cells (contams and happy myco's) by dehydration. Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol is less drying (but still poisonous!) to cells but also tends to stay wet longer. In the lab we use the 70% ETOH for all surface disinfecting. 95%, as sold in liquor stores is overkill, dilute it to 70% and save some money. My favorite, CLEAN with bleach solution, sterilize with ETOH, its the double whammy.
Happy growing, -The Doc.
