Let me tell you as a 27 year old male with a wife and 2 kids and minimum wage income.

Out of curiosity (and if you don't mind sharing) where do you work for minimum wage?

My first job ever, cashier at a supermarket in high school, paid $6.75/hr starting, with a $.25/hr raise every 6 months or so. This is already a whole dollar over minimum wage.

By college, I got a summer job at Barnes & Noble. That paid out $8.50/hr with raises of $.25/hr to $.50/hr every six months, depending on your performance review. When I got a promotion to a lead position there was an automatic salary increase of $1.00/hr, so by the end of 1 summer I was clearing $10.00/hr.

The medical plan at B&N was great too. Doctors' visits were only a $20 co-pay ($10 if it was a "plan" doctor) and the yearly deductible was REALLY low (I want to say less than $5000, but that seems too low. Still, it was great.)

This was a job that required no special degree, nor skills beyond basic english and computer operation. It had great medical benefits, paid $10/hr, and was located in a metropolitan area with reasonable public transit. I was able to live in a low-rent area of the city and make it to work via bus/train.

Since it was so easy to get such a job, and the pay was well above minimum wage, AND the medical benefits were good, I just can't help but wonder why anyone would work at a minimum wage job.

I'm not trying to belittle anyone, I'm just honestly curious about what sort of situation you find yourself in that a minimum wage job is your only option.

One thing that really bothers me is going to the goodwill or waterfront mission to find some clothes or something cheap, and theres all these wealthy women in there cherry picking all the decent stuff.  I mean sometimes there will be some nice namebrand clothes or useful stuff that people get rid of in there and its cheap, but theres nothing left after these women go through it all.  I understand its a free, open-to-the-public market, but wheres these peoples conscious?  Do they not realize its intention is for underclass people who can't afford the fresh new stuff?  I don't know, maybe I'm being selfish.  I just get angry when I see them leave with two carts full of things, and all I want is a clean shirt to go to work in and am left with a scant selection of aged, beaten clothes.  Have any of you noticed this?

yeah and it really bothers me that the government found out that when the salvation army started out for awhile...giving out everything for free- that it NOW comes with a price...and yeah it  bothers me that anything that looks brand new- they'll sell it over at least 30 bucks and over which you can get in any brand name store...but the rest that are rusty and musky ,and barely last forever is the only discount...but what ever happened to a society that equally shares?

Wait, that will never happen  :frown:

Hey economist. No, there are options out there. I'm just currently stuck doing minimum wage. When I lost my last job (Due to a random drug test, for which I feel utmost guilt) I didn't have time to look around and search for an equal or higher than minimum wage job. I had to work and work somewhere fast, so I took a job at the local grocery store. Thats where I am now. On top of that, out here in the country the job market isn't exactly "booming" because everyone has all the help they need, therefore I have to stick with what I got 'til something better becomes available. Nah, I don't take any offense from your question, I understand because I used to wonder the same thing about other people. It's just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. For me thats Robertsdale, Alabama in the year 2007. Everything is circumstance, and nothing is trivial. You can get that tattooed on you and it would NEVER fade.

My favorites are weeping willows, which aren't really weeping at all. They're very wispy, witty and will dance in the breeze with you. Nothing like a tree that wants to dance with you. Although it doesn't like its thin limbs being pulled at all, it absolutely LOVES it when you walk through them, letting them gently slide over your face and shoulders. If you're naked, the willow considers it to be sex. It will orgasm on your mind and you will blow dream chunks into outer space. All very fun until your neighbor sees you.                                    -The Joekenorer

Eat fresh fruits, veggies and nuts.
Meat and eggs I take on my own or recieve for working for farmers whom I believe respect their animals, I also fish for food at times.
Car insurance is easy because I don't spend money on drugs, alcohol, tv, phones or much fuel.
Car payment same for all reasons above.
I rarely drive unless it's out of town.
I go on vacation atleast 2 months a year and I've went for as long as 4 months before.
I got myself out of debt for the most part at 23 and never plan on going back.

Ya...and when you need it , it'll be gone.
The baby boomer's will be sure to suck all that up I'm sure.

Where I live we have ccp and an optional rsp which I'm sure will both be exhausted by the time it's my turn.

If they report you as contract labor, (they will if they have any sense) you'll be stuck forking over the taxes you would've paid come tax time. Save.

Yes, contract labor. It allows a business to claim your pay as an expense for outside services. If they don't, the cash they pay you 'under the table' is taxed because to the IRS it will appear as profit. By the business claiming you as contract labor they are essentialy showing that pay as an expense and it will not be taxed.

If they do claim your wages as contract labor, you will have to file a 1099 come April 15th.

Contract labor/independent contractor.

Any business owner should have enough sense to show someone's pay as an expense.

Well then why call it "under the table" anymore?

Probably to get you to think your getting a good deal and therefore getting you to work their low paying 10 per hour job while making you think you getting a higher paying job and at the end of the year you get fucked, not them.

EDIT: dont get me wrong, under the table pay still exists, Ive worked them this year while Ive been laid off but theres no way Id take one from someone Im not friends with.

I was offering advice to the guy so he wouldn't get fucked come tax time. Eventually, the IRS catches on to 'under the table' BS and the 'employee' gets fucked along with the shady business that hired him.

It gets pretty complicated and I only scratched the surface. I would rather not go in depth because I can tell you're only trying to... Really, I'm not sure what you're getting at.

My point is, don't think you don't have to pay taxes because it's 'under the table'. Many times it goes unreported, but it's a risk that will always be there.

By paying 'under the table' you skip carrying workers comp for anyone on the job. Independent contractors are responsible for their own health care in the unlikely event that someone gets hurt and you can fire them without much recourse.

"under the table"...to me anyway, means being paid in 'cash'.
Like 20's,50's,100's etc...

"under the table" means NO paper trail...that's the whole point!

If these guy's are offering you $10 p/h under the table, then expect to be paid in cash...If they give you a check, accept the check, cash it and find another job.
