We work jobs we hate...
    #3763821 - 02/10/05 09:06 PM (12 years, 12 days ago)

Hello all shroomlettes. Does anyone else really FEEL this quote? I'm talking muscles tense, heart pumping, air in your lungs- invigorated.

"I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off"

I'm serious! Does anyone here share this anger/frustration/confusion/depression about the present day slave trade? people love quoting tyler durden from fight club, but WHERE IS THE ACTION? is anyone really fighting this "spiritual war"? is anyone out there determined to fight this struggle for freedom from the known? to 'walk the path' of personal actualization, with all it's rawness and pain, to create a better situation?

I am sick of this shit. we are building their pyramids. on broken backs we construct their luxury. our lives are a sacrifice to the deities of capital and isms. fuck it all. where is our real choice? where is our personal sovereignty?!

anyone else feel the same??!

I think a lot of people here don't fall into that trap. If you did and woke up, good for you, but I think there are probably a lot of creative people here who do do their own thing and don't really do what society tells them too.

I'm determined to get out of debt, get some financial security, and eventually move far away and live simple. I cannot do that now because I do not wish to be homeless, squatting, and dumpster-diving like some crimethinc kid - been there, done that. I do wish to live comfortable - just simple. No children, no television, no credit cards, no fashion, no SUV, no central heating/AC - just books, my own place, my animals, my vegetables I grew myself, my music...

Yes, I CERTAINLY DO feel that quote. Here's another that I feel, just as strongly:

"Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family, Choose a fucking big television, Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players, and electrical tin openers.

Choose good health, low cholesterol and dental insurance. Choose fixed-interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends.

Choose leisure wear and matching luggage. Choose a three piece suite on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing sprit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing you last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked-up brats you have spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life.

But who would I want to do a thing like that?"

--------------------
You're here because you know something.
What you know you can't explain,
But you feel it;
You've felt it your entire life.
That there's something wrong with the world.
You don't know what it is, but it's there....
Like a splinter in your mind...
Driving you mad.

I read your post while sitting in my house, on my comfortable couch, with my large TV and sound system blaring, and my nice new laptop computer staring at me.

when? I planning on the next 5 years.

who? Not sure.

where? No idea - has to be warm and inexpensive and rural and near an ocean - wherever that could be.

Hominid, I am fighting for that path! I see it as so important to push for that self actualization. Fuck their rules, fuck their morals, fuck their and my khakis.

There are so many ways to figure out how to be successful and free if one is willing to put the creativity and time into it. I dont see much hope in a successful revolution of the masses (slaves) but I see hope in a personal battle. Overcome your own chains, create your own world..i really feel that if i am not doing this...not doing what I WANT then I AM A SLAVE AND AM QUICKLY DYING.

You should post more often. It seems as though you may have some big things to say.

While all you guys are "being free" out on the streets and homeless, I will wave at you as I drive by in my Mercedes.

And I'll shake my head in pity because the time you spent on paying for that penis on wheels was wasted at some job where you live to make someone else money so they can laugh at you for wasting your time working for them as they sit by their pool side in the house with their 3 Mercedes drinking a nice cool alcoholic beverage (in the winter because thy have an indoor heated pool...)

too far? haha.

hey, life's just a balance between one's pleasures, whatever they may be, and one's ability to sustain those pleasures (survival, securing resources, choosing one's pleasures in the first place...)

so, if working working working working working, then watching some huge impersonal tv and sitting on a couch is great for you, then well- great for you. it is hard for me to imagine 1- finding joy in such things besides every once in a while, and 2- doesn't sound too easy being able to sustain such a lavicious situaiton, and the other ameniities that probably come with that consumer mindset.

i'm interested in feeling free. i just couldn't do that living through other's adventures on the television screen. but, hey, we're all different...

It's a simple trade-off. I want to eat, wear decent clothes, move out of my parents' house, have comfortable surroundings, and buy music, books, movies, and drugs. I have nothing to offer in exchange for those things except my labor. So while I may not like working, I like the reward I get for that. Work means I have the freedom to do all those things. But if you're more comfortable being an aesthetic who shuns material possessions and lives off of other people's charity, by all means be my guest.
