Re: How do people who work low-paying jobs survive? [Re: Spooge]

I said motivation because it is something that would need to be accounted for in this hypothetical world. What motivates us in our current society? If we suddenly strip that away, we sure as hell better find something else to fill the gap.

You said throwing away selfishness and greed is all that would be needed, but I feel that there is more.

Well self-sufficient remote tribes in the amazon seem to fine. They fill the gap with hunting and/or growing crops, building and constructing each other's homes.

The fact that they don't have competition to make the "most" is one of the reasons most of these tribes live pretty damn contently.

You don't need motivation to make the most of something to be happy.

I think it is a convenient hippie pipe dream to assume that indigenous tribes are more content than other people.

I think that's a typical north american assumption as well.

I'm betting they are much more content.  They don't want any part of our way of life.

Of course neither you or I will never truly know.

either way, it doesn't work this way.

this thread motivated me about 30 minutes ago when i started talking about stealing, that and the fact that i just got a speeding ticket today...so i just got done stealing these goods...

rounded down from the sales price, it's about $50 in personal hygiene goods, things that i would end up buying later down the road.

Let me tell you as a 27 year old male with a wife and 2 kids and minimum wage income. You have to do without. The kids have to do without. The wife has to do without. We all eat lunch and dinner. Thats it. If we ever have anything extra, we spend it on the kids out of guilt. They have a few toys, and don't really seem to mind. They don't know any different, and are quick to hug me when I seem angry or depressed about our situation. We don't tell them we're scraping by, but I think they already understand and just don't care as long as they get to play and be happy. Right nows bills are getting paid, but they slip a day or so later every month due the paradox of the timing between pay and bill time. I really have to get a better job or the paradox will spiral down to the point where things get turned off and we get kicked out. That may take a few months, but its coming nonetheless. When you get down this low you always hear people saying "get a better job" or "save your money better, instead of buying for the kids" or anything of the such. The fact of the matter is, that little bit of spending we do get to do every month is what keeps me from hanging myself in the woods. (I might shoot myself, but I sold my .50 to the pawn shop two months ago.) A lot of people who are financially secure, or even partially so, just don't get it. And understandably so. I have nothing against those who make more than me, I applaud them. But goddamnit man, its so depressing, and the depression makes it hard to cope, and you have to cope to keep the rope away from your neck. We have no government help here, maybe we could if we could afford the gas to get to the Department of Human Resources 45 miles away.

In short, low income families do make it out here. But its not stable. I mean physically its stable, but mentally, everyone is suffering excruciating depression that noone else except others in that situation can comprehend.

(And for those nit-pickers. I bought this computer in 99' with my income tax, my internet is 28k dial-up with Juno for free as long as theres a banner ad on top of EVERYTHING, and I'm surfing the shroomery because shrooms are free out here. The only drugs I do are weed and cubes, and weed only when its free from a friend.)

My favorites are weeping willows, which aren't really weeping at all. They're very wispy, witty and will dance in the breeze with you. Nothing like a tree that wants to dance with you. Although it doesn't like its thin limbs being pulled at all, it absolutely LOVES it when you walk through them, letting them gently slide over your face and shoulders. If you're naked, the willow considers it to be sex. It will orgasm on your mind and you will blow dream chunks into outer space. All very fun until your neighbor sees you.                                    -The Joekenorer

If you are replying to me, I don't understand because I agree with you.

...man, I feel for your situation.  Your making it though and that counts for a lot

Around here, construction jobs in the summer pay pretty decently and hire just about anyone. Unfortunately that means you have to drop whatever your current job is, and come the cold season, you best hope you can find a new one.

Tough stuff.

And people need to realize, living on your own on minimum wage is one battle, but trying to support a family...that's a totally different story.

I can only relate to my own upbringing, but I've never been in the shoes of my father.

When he was 2 years younger than me, he already was married with 2 kids.  I just can't imagine it.  I can barely support myself right now.  I just couldn't imagine it with a kid or two.

Again man, props to you

I'm sure just about everyone here has been poor at some time or another in their lives. And if they haven't already, surely someday they may. Its hard not to be sympathetic when so many people are poor not because they are lazy, but because circumstances of life fuck things up and no matter how good of a person you are, the world can always turn around and take a huge shit on you.

Heh. Being poor sucks ass, but you just have to keep trying until you get to that comfortable spot.

One thing that really bothers me is going to the goodwill or waterfront mission to find some clothes or something cheap, and theres all these wealthy women in there cherry picking all the decent stuff. I mean sometimes there will be some nice namebrand clothes or useful stuff that people get rid of in there and its cheap, but theres nothing left after these women go through it all. I understand its a free, open-to-the-public market, but wheres these peoples conscious? Do they not realize its intention is for underclass people who can't afford the fresh new stuff? I don't know, maybe I'm being selfish. I just get angry when I see them leave with two carts full of things, and all I want is a clean shirt to go to work in and am left with a scant selection of aged, beaten clothes. Have any of you noticed this?

We have something like that called a Value Village. It's used clothes from all over town and such.

I love that shit. I have found awesome, pretty much brand new clothes , for dirt cheap.

There is a dedicated group of middleclass/slightly wealthy moms who scour that store regularly and religously, when I know they can afford to at least shop at walmart, zellers, sears and such

Just wanted to send my love out to all my poor homies at the Shroomery. I too am going through some rougher times and fear for my financial future. I should be positive and creative though. I can definitely make it work. :peace:
