How do people who work low-paying jobs survive?

In order to pay for rent, utilities, food, car insurance, etc... you need to make so much more money than low-paying jobs pay.

How the hell do people do it? I'm sincerely interested.

I lived off of Ramen for 6 months right when I got out of high school. Never again. If I was stranded in the Arctic and dying of hunger I still wouldn't eat that shit.

Welfare, unemployment, stealing, cutting corners on the budget, etc. It's not easy I would imagine. Even for dual income, "middle class" types it gets harder and harder.

Learn to live without.
Learn to cope when the times come that you don't got money for food, toiletries, ect...
once you realize that plenty of people live happy lives without much money, and there are a lot of sad rich folk, than you understand that most humans learn to adapt to anything.

I get money from the gov't and various other sources to pay for school, either by means of grants or by low-interest loans that don't start compounding interest for a while.

Up until recently, I have been surviving off of one part-time weekend job. I get about 175-225 a week from it. That's roughly 800 a month. My rent is 320, power is 50, water is 20, cable internet is 25 (i have a roommate and split everything evenly). So that's 415. I don't have any car payments, and my father has been cool enough to keep me on his insurance plan, so no money going there, and I try to avoid driving when I can to spend as little as possible on gas. Food is probably 50-75 a week. So I'd make it by with about 100 a month to spend on whatever.

I've been trying for the most part to make it by without the aid of my parents, however, I do have one small card that my dad will pay off so long as i spend less than like 80 bucks a month on it, so i generally use that for gas. I don't have health insurance or homeowner's insurance to pay or anything else like that.

Now, i've got a second job that will probably pull in about the same amount as my other job. If i could just get some more hours with it, i could be making more. But i'll pretty much be set, even if i don't get more hours. I'll be making like 300-350 a week b/t the two jobs, which is nothing fantastic (i'll still be in the low-paying job category, right?) and i honestly don't see living being a problem at all. Then again, i'm just a single 20 yr old guy.

I lived off low paying jobs (less than 10 per hour) for years.  Its not that hard if you budget your money and choose to live in poor areas.

Studio apartment, cheap car with no payment, no going out to eat or buying expensive luxuries like cell phones.

tiny_rabid_birds  has the right idea with the 320 rent.  My first apartment's rent was $360 (and I only had one home invasion! :smile: )

A lot of them just work a few different low-paying jobs at the same time. I had 3 part-time jobs in college and worked probably 50-55 hours a week to pay rent and books and shit.

I also worked with a guy at AM/PM in SoCal who also worked at the gas station across the street and as a security guard. He had kids to take care of so the poor guy must have been working a shitload of hours.

there's a book called Nickel and Dimed that I'd recommend if you're really that interested.

it's by this woman who spent some time working low wage jobs in various parts of the country as an experiment. It's pretty interesting, and at times funny.
