How does being underweight affect your heart?

I know that severe anorexics can develop heart conditions. I'm just mainly curious how that is? Do they get so skinny that as their body consumes muscles for energy it actually consumes heart muscle too? Or what..

I just made myself kind of paranoid. I've been developing some heart problems in the last 2 years and I'm significantly underweight (since before I was a vegetarian..if anyone is keeping up with my rampant posting)

About 140 at 6'1. Not healthy I know but I'm working on it!

I don't think it is something you have to worry about, just being skinny.

I was 120 lbs and 5'7 for most of my life (I'm 140 now) and I never had any problems with my heart despite having a heart murmer when I was born that lasted well into my teens. I had a ECG and an uiltrasound done on my heart when I was 20, and it all came back clean..."excellent cardiac health" was what my doc said.

I think the heart problems experienced by anorexics is because of the poor nutrition...and not due to the lack of weight. Electrolite imbalance could cause irregular heart beat, for example.

Yes, when the body has consumed all the calories it has stored as fat, it will begin consuming the muscles.  Anorexics who develop heart problems usually have severely weakened and decreased the size of their hearts.  Less severe heart problems can be caused by potassium deficiency, a common problem with both anorexia and bulimia.

Being thin, yet fairly healthy, is unlikely to result in heart problems.  Anorexics are literally starving themselves to death, with inevitable results. :sad:

Well I'm 6'1 and I bottomed out at 143 pounds with my clothes on. This is at my poorest health. The doctor didn't say anything about it but everyone on God's green earth has been calling me way-too-skinny for way too long. I couldn't even see it really. I would say "Yeah, I'm skinny. So what?"

But lately I've been seeing myself in the mirror a little differently. It's almost scary. My cheeks were sunk in. I have NO mass at all in my arms. I used to just see arms but now I see bones.

I'm almost embarrased about it now. I don't know how I got this skinny. I do know that I misinterpreted and was misguided by quite a few religious texts of various sorts. So that's over...

I don't know where I'm doing with this. This thread is still really great so feel free to reply with abandon.

I disagree about the dietary cholesterol though. Our bodies make cholesterol naturally. There is no need to get any extra.

I didn't recommend dietary cholesterol--that was browndustin on your other thread. He claimed that it was "good," and I asked him what benefits he believed it had. (No answer thus far.)

I agree that our liver will produce adequate cholesterol from the fat in our diet, so there is no need to consume dietary cholesterol (found only in animal products and meat).

Haha, Vertias you are right. I replied to the wrong thread to the wrong person about cholesterol! If I would have looked and saw "Veritas" I would have known right away I was misplaced, if that meanss anything :smile:
