ultrasonic fogger
    #6967085 - 05/25/07 08:31 PM (16 years, 9 months ago)

ive read a few threads about ultrasonic foggers being placed in a cool mist humidifier. (looks like the fogger is for frog aquariums?) is this a viable alternative to a stand-alone ultrasonic humidifier? or am i better off buying the stand-alone unit?

Yes just make sure it is a impeller type of coolmist. Or you could build one of Agar's style humidifier's with a stand-alone unit.

Yep there ya go
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6252361#6252361

You can scale this down too and just run it in a plastic tub with a fan blowing over the top of it. Have the ultrasonic fogger hooked to a timer. Ultrasonic fogger's are awesome and can handle just about any size room if you have a big enough fogger.

18 or 20 gallon plastic barrel

Small SQL cage fan & PVC fittings on lid outside.

The underside of the lid.

Inside the barrel.
Water, fogger on float, air stone bubbler & submersible water heater.

Fogger on.

Results  (25 cfm FAE w/100% Rh, w/fogger on))

Advantages:
Automated.
Small footprint.
Large water reservoir.
Tough enough to kick hard, without leaks, or damage.
Very quite.
No special tools to build.
Easy to refill with water.
Any back/flow moisture/condensation falls into reservoir.
On a timer, provides FAE.
Bubbler air stone provides high constant Rh.
Fogger provides adjustable on/demand higher Rh.
Water heater assures that FAE/Rh input temperature is the same as FC.

Fan should go 50,000 hours.
Fogger should go 5 to 10,000 hours.
(if you have soft water & clean it weekly).

Considering that you would only need to run the unit 10 minutes, every 4 or 6 hours.
It should last one hell of a long time.

A pre-filter pad over the fan intake will help keep out dust/gunk.

It would be wise to empty a bottle of 3% peroxide in it every time you refill the reservoir.

Plus, empty it & sanitize the inside at the least monthly.

For the open head plastic drums, I would suggest looking in your local phone book.
Survival type & army surplus stores often carry them for food & water storage.
Sometimes recycle places have them.
If that fails try your local craigslist.

Worst case, do a google search.
But, if you can get a clean used one locally.
It is FAR cheaper (usually $15 or $20).
New/retail price is often high & shipping sucks.

There are also (tough enough to stand on) rigid type totes, with tight latched lids, that could work.
I have also seen several high quality smaller brand name plastic garbage cans that could work.

All in all, a plastic drum is the preferred choice.
Simply because they are so tough & close air tight.

As for matching small computer type SQL cage cooling fans, to a transformer.
It takes some looking.
The fans are usually all over ebay, fairy cheap.
You can also do an ebay search for "transformers".
Sometimes, you get lucky.

I found several transformers that would work, from thrift stores.
Sometimes computer surplus, and recycle places will have power supplies that match this type fan.

Thing is a 24V fan, will run on a 12V transformer, at 1/2 speed.
A 24V fan will run on an 18V transfomer about 2/3rds speed.
A 12V fan will run on a 9V transformer at about 3/4 speed.
So on & so forth.

You just DON'T want a transformer, more powerful than the fan motors.
As, it will toast them. :mad2:

Because there are a bazillion fans & a bizillion transformers.
You just have to keep your eyes open for compatible ones.

Once you have a fan or 3, you can also google search for a matching transformer retail online.

Good luck.

My fan is also a bit more powerful than needed.
I did the same, with a dial control, to slow it down.

They don't appear to be putting out much fog.
Because they move a high volume of air, along with it.

Because of that volume of air moving.
Micron size mist/fog particles are almost invisible.

But, mark my words, what is coming out.
Is near or at 100% Rh.

Hold a clean water glass over the output pipe/hose.
(with unit on)
It should immediately cloud up with vapor.
Then condense inside the glass & drip down the glass walls.

Just place it in your cool mist and cycle it on and off . It works great .

It will provide a nice fog

when needed .

Agar's set up is nice , but more then most peeps need . I'm building one though . Plan on running about 14 lines from it for 7 green houses
