what is peer pressure?
    #6893722 -

I just wanted to know if anyone has a legitimate example of peer pressure? It is my personal belief that peer pressure is somewhat of a myth. I believe that that are very few isolated incidents involving peer pressure and that the phrase is grossly abused. I believe that peer pressure is just an excuse for weak character and people who succumb to it either wanted it to happen or they just got caught and used it for an  excuse to blame someone else. It's just an example of lack of responsibility in our culture. Just like the V-Tech massacre everyone tries to blame it on someone else other than Cho, antidepressants, campus security, the media, and even Hollywood. Just a personal belief that if anyone of gets caught(and some of us do  :frown:) you need to take responsibility for your choice and defend it to the grave.Just some opinions on the matter would be awesome

Yeah right, peer pressure is EVERYWHERE. Anytime you smoke some tree with friends and you quit, someone's going to say "come on, one more hit." Or just going anywhere that have lots of people doing some sort of drug, that's peer pressure itself. I honestly see peer pressure on a daily basis.

That said, it's not a good excuse.

if you think every one is an individual and that there is no such thing as peer pressure then you should just shoot your self. I mean, I would. people are fucking stupid, and probably always will be. mob mentality and all that.

Peer Pressure is a bitch. When you get older, people can pressure you into taking your life down a road that you don't want to go, but you figure that's the only way because it's a means of survival and they're doing it and seem stable/happy, and that's just how it's done.

I have learned to not let anyone dictate what I want to do, and I back off immediately when someone, anyone, gets pushy with me. It's a defense I have built up to fight off Peer Pressure. I'm not saying that I make the best decisions all the time, because that is FAR from true. However, everyone of my decisions now is mine and mine alone. I am done taking influence from others, even my closest friends and relatives.

It was mostly just an elitist thing in middle school.
If anybody inside, or outside of our fucked up little social circles turned down drugs, they were labeled "preppie".
These days its mostly in good nature, like betting a friend that he can't do a giant rail, because you know that it will make his day.

I don't think VTech had jack shit to do with peer pressure, but it is a very real thing. Many adolescents are inauthentic with the mindset of the "they". Such as, "They are doing it, why not me?", in which "they"= his or her peers. There isn't much of a sense of individuality among adolescents. Why do you think popularity is such a big thing among them? If their peers are doing something and being praised for it in one way or another, why shouldn't they do it also? Praise comes in many forms, with drugs it's the instant gratification of felling high. Thus in the example of drugs "peer pressure" arises from one's yearning to conform with the "they". If their peers are having a good time getting high, and they are "popular" or "cool" for doing it, why not? That's just indirect peer pressure. A good example of direct peer pressure would simply be "Come on dude, just take a toke, everyone else does it".

That was just a stoned ramble but I think you get the jist of it.

Pretty much the same. We don't peer pressure... per say.. We just do stupid dares. I got dared to pipe a bit of my denim jeans for a spliff... so of course in good humour I did it

I dared my mate to do a line of ketamine as big as a dvd case (from top to bottom - the longest way) about 0.5cm thick..

I thought peer pressure was what people needed friends for in the first place.  Deep down I think our subconscious' knows we need someone whom we trust to give us a few kicks in the ass.

people who give in to peer pressure are pussies. and friends that try to pressure people into doing something are assoles. when it comes to the crunch it's your decision what you do in life and you shouldn't let other peoples opinions influence your decision. "peer pressure" is a term that mothers use to protect their little "angels" when they find out they've been doing drugs or having sex. maybe peer pressure is bigger in america i don't know, but from most peoples views on circumsision, i think so.

If people are so weak as to not make their own decisions, good riddance. Without peer pressure, I probably would still be an elitist prude telling people drugs are bad. It was ultimately my decision in the end, but without someone even giving me the idea it wouldn't have crossed my mind.

I think there comes a time in life where we need to know EXACTLY what we want...or at least be 99% sure.  Therefore, you take what others say for what it is.  Discard the bad, keep the good.  You can probably disregard 99.9% of it, but that makes sense.  Other people are not you.  So, their opinion is based on their own life and experiences, not yours.

I am a stubborn person I've been told.  To me, it's my life to lead.  I must rely on my instincts first and others' opinions second.  Maybe that will change, maybe not.

and if you don't agree with that?  Fuck off.

If you honestly believe you can make any choice in your life without being influenced by the opinions of someone else at some point in time, you're lying to yourself.

I never said that. I take what I want from their advice. I make the decision but I'm more conscious now about it. Friends can create barriers for their friends and not realize it because they really don't want to see them change. I had to move away from all my friends to realize this. I just don't want anyone having that much power over my happiness or lack of.
