Most signifigant influences in your life (past & present)?
    #4879829 - 11/01/05 02:04 PM (18 years, 3 months ago)

Can be positive or negative... (in no specific order)

#1 - Music, especially Pearl Jam and Tool, and in the past, the Smashing Pumpkins. Pearl Jam was one of the first times I was exposed to something I really connected to, and the more time went on, the more I got into them. Mike McCready is also one of the most signifigant influences on my guitar playing. Highly underrated guitarist, mainly because his solos are just so unbelievably emotional at times (see Mad Season's November Hotel, a live performance of Black etc..). Tool... I could go on for days, but they totally changed my outlook on life. The ideas in AEinma shown a perspective I had never seen before, and Lateralus is just briming with positive, metaphysical outlook. Third Eye really got me into meditation and the lyrics to Reflection, "You will come to find that we are all one mind, capable of all that's imaginable and concievable, so let the light touch you, let the words spill through, bringing out our hope and reason". Just wow.

#2 - Learning to play guitar. Having a creative outlet for expressing ideas that you generally can't necessarily discuss otherwise (there are certain aspects of ourselves that we understand that nobody else does, at least without a way to express them) was benifical in sorting things out. It was extremely tough in the begining, but I'm glad I stuck with it.

#3 - Certain people in my life. This is a no brainer. Rather then mention a list of people, I'll just say that it's both positive and negative, however in the case of the negative, ultimately it can be positive when doing some introspection to learn from it. You get the idea.

#4 - Drugs. Again, both positive and negative, but after learning about them from Erowid & the Shroomery, even the negative side became incredibly positive. There are certain things that I would have never realized if it weren't for drugs, and looking back at my life prior to using drugs, I lived trying to mirror myself in the world around me. Drugs opened up an awareness about myself that, through learned behavior, I was told to deny.  Which is why it is so weird, and totally bizarre to read about all the negatives of drugs, but only the positives in rare sources. I'm not denying that drugs can have a negative side, which is obvious, but by focusing only on the negative, we tend to set ourselves up for a "self-fullfilling prophecy".

#5 - Not doing my homework and failing, and if you'll excuse me, I need to not do that.  :smirk:

The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

My father- because he is compassionate.

Running and Yoga- for obvious health-related reasons.

Reading and writing.

Strippers- My one true weakness.

I would have mentioned that, but I didn't feel like mentioning the obvious.  :smirk:

Actually, I haven't been to a strip club in 5 years.

That's probably all the better- it's a good place to get the green sucked out of your dollar bills. :popular:

Education - Not just school, but also things I've learned on my own. I've developed a real love for learning new things.

Family - My parents have played a big role in my life, but my extended family has also been extremely influential, particularly my uncle and my grandfather.

Drugs - For better or worse(mostly better), they've changed me in a profound way. I can't imagine what I would be like if I hadn't used them. My life would be so profoundly different as to be unrecognizable from my current one.

The Shroomery - This place has been like a second family for me. At best, it's been a supportive group of friends whom I can turn to when I don't have anywhere else to go. At worst, it's been a powerful addiction that deprives me of a social life.

I have to throw in the ol' "Education" along with paradigm. I don't know what I'll do with myself when I finally finish school in the next year.

...the whole experience is (and is as) a profound piece of knowledge.  It is an indellible experience; it is forever known.  I have known myself in a way I doubt I would have ever occurred except as it did.

...most subjects find the experience valuable, some find it frightening, and many say that is it uniquely lovely.

Ahh yes, learning is always a very signifigant aspect of life. Unfortunately, my early school years were an extremely negative experience, and put me off on learning, but going back to college is everything positive that was negative (minus a few things here & there).

He was the first to synthesize LSD, if you're going to put mushrooms around a name try Terence Mckenna.
