Yeah, I bet we could walk on water, and make bread and fish appear too.

Miracles, things that are currently considered impossible, actually fall under "theological tie-ins," wheras longetivity can not be considered a "miracle" in light of this thread's sources.

So just as I said...
The bible writes about people who lives for almost 1000 years. Since it's biologically possible to do, according to the turtles, maybe those descriptions were portraying the truth - regardless of the theological tie-ins, whatever your thoughts on those are.

It's not a statement arguing Jesus, it's a statement supporting natural longetivity.

Turtles are different animals than humans. I mean, completely different species. That was a good argument for the dinosaurs, but they became extinct a long time ago.

I understand the distinction, but my point is that saying that shit might have been true because it is in the bible is pretty retarded in light of all the ridiculous shit that's in the bible

It's impossible not to be afraid of death. You can laugh in the face of death and be extreme with your life, but past history has shown that it will shorten your life significantly.

It's completely possible not to be afraid of death.

Quote:
I think we need to come to terms with the fact that death is imminant and a natural part of life.

By that logic, so is catching the flu and breaking a leg, and neither should be treated medically.

Quote:
I am sure there comes time in many elderly's lives that they think of death as peace, therefore they are no longer afraid of it.

But you previously stated that it's impossible not to be afraid of death.

Quote:
It's the aging process, and the mind is in control of it all.

The mind isn't actually, it's wearing down and losing control along with everything else.

Quote:
The older you get, the more at peace you become with life and death(hopefully).

Your peace has nothing to do with age. Age is not relative to peace.

Quote:
If we take away the idea of death, I don't think we would accomplish more. I think it would be more chaotic than it already is.

I really don't think so. Most of this world's corruption has to do with people wanting to get as much as they can as fast as they can because they fear the clock is ticking.

I love talking to interesting elders. Their stories are fascinating, and the ones with strong characters are amazing people. Hopefully this country will learn to treat them better, because with any luck, we will be one of them one day. I don't want to live forever. Just until I'm old.

You know where those stories came from? From being alive for a long, long time, not from being far along in the physical aging proccess. They were made into amazing people by the opportunities they had while they were still strong and not yet too old. If they lived forever they'd have even more stories to tell, and they'd still be accumulating them, and they'd have better memories to recall them with.

I didn't use that as proof or evidence, but something interesting to consider when thinking about what's "natural."

I don't think it's question of natural vs. unnatural, because I find the idea that something can be "unnatural" is pretty ridiculous. I just think there would be moral problems.
Who gets to be immortal?
What about reproduction? Until we found new places to live, there would never be new people, just the same, old, stagnant fuckers that have been around for decades or even centuries. At a point things would slow to a halt I would think.
Then how do we decide who gets kids? Because the kids will be immortal, so it's not like everyone can go around popping out 3 kids, we would run out of space again.

I personally would be uncomfortable with something like this at the moment, I wouldn't want to have it happen to me.

It's called a disruption in the balance of life and death. That's why we have the ability to reproduce and instill what we learned to the next wave of achievement and story collecting.

Quit looking at death as merely your body giving out. I believe with every good moment in our lives, we obtain motivation to keep going, and with every bad moment, we learn exactly what this place is all about. To age is to experience. Just because it appears like a bad thing up front and may be unpleasant to be around, doesn't mean that it isn't a valuable tool to finding inner peace.

If we were immortal, we would constantly live our lives as immortals, and the need to slow down and catch our breath would be useless. We will all be living our lives at 1,000 miles per hour. Chaos, in my opinion.

Ask any interesting elder, and he will tell you about the stupid things he did when he was young. It's interesting what lessons some people learn that others will never experience.

No, to live life is to experience. The problem is that we all only know life with death, so imagining it without death seems to go against everything we know.

You're still arguing from the presumption that death at a certain point is the optimal occurance. What is this based on?
People don't need old age to reflect. In fact, mental proccessing and understanding skills decrease with old age. The mind work's much better when at its prime.

Inner peace is to be had at any point in life, and if you personally don't slow down every once in a while that's not youth's fault, it's yours.

What you are saying is "Death is good because I don't have the self-control to reflect without it." Which isn't to say that death is good at all, but to say that your own lack of self-control is bad.
Anything you do when old can be done while still young, and more proficiently.

No, to live life is to experience.

But to age is an experience all in itself. It's an experience of your body getting slower on you, the need to relax rather than run around, the need to sit and reflect and see what is good in your life and what can be discarded That's what I'm looking forward to anyway, when all the work is said and done.

Without that happening, those would not experience aging. Yes, I believe the physical act of aging is also a mental experience.

To live is an experience is a very broad idea. Narrow it down a bit. I am talking about one aspect of life, aging. I would like to experience it, personally. It's long and drawn out and we all come to terms with it in our own ways. I hope my last years are spent in heaven on earth. We create our own heaven. When we're dead, we're dead. So why waste time being unhappy? So, we eventually find a way to achieve happiness over yes... time. Time and Aging are directly linked. It's a part of life. Why fuck with it?

So you want to experience physical and mental degradation? No thanks, I'd rather live healthy my whole life, but not be immortal. You can relax and reflect without aging.
Also, if you want to look at it like not aging would be losing that experience, you would also gain the experience of... well, not having to deal with again. I'd be willing to bet that by not aging you would have many more experiences than if you were to age. Plus if you have the ability to live for hundreds of years, it's not like you're going to run around like a 20 year old the whole time. Even without the physical and mental changes that come with aging I still think most people would eventually have the same experience, which I usually associate with being "wiser" than you once were, not aging.

I still personally wouldn't want to be immortal.
Or at least have the option of offing myself after a while in a painless fashion, but maybe that's being greedy.
I also wouldn't want to see this enacted (like we have the technology to do it right now or something) until the real issues were worked out.
It's not like if Dr.Comacho wanted to age they wouldn't let him... I hope something like this would be optional.

You can look at it as degradation, but that's only because our country has such a negative stigma when it comes to the elderly. Their degraded when their stuffed in a nursing home and their fucked up, too-busy-to-deal-with-them kids are still running around in the rat race and they rot away in a room with a tv.

If you stick them near a beach and surround them with constant access to the family and good friends that made their lives worth living, it can be a very honorable thing and I good way to spend your days.

All I'm saying is, we can't fight. It's called evolution, which is just an addition to the idea of aging. We age, we morph to suit our surroundings and we exist until we don't any longer. Our mind evolves this way too, and the term ignorance is bliss just might apply to the shutting down of the brain in certain areas and allowing a state of peace to consume the body and mind. I dont' want to fight it any longer. I spent too much of my life doing so. It's actual a beautiful thing if you're just willing to accept it for what it is.

I'm wondering how we might be able to build the mental connections to gain control of the aging proccess ourselves. There must be a way to send out the proper signals to have my body create new cells for its vital organs just like with other cells... so I believe, anyhow.

Ignorance is not bliss, it's denial. Whoever came up with that line was ignorant, and therefore could not be an authority on whether ignorance = bliss or not.

If you find ignorance better than awareness that means you have issues that need to be worked out and you're running from them. If you don't have issues to work out and everything is fine with your mind, then becoming ignorant is nothing but a loss.

Well I personally believe that human intelligence is part of evolution. Otherwise we would have been wiped out a long god damn time ago. Any technological advances are simply functions of evolution, all signs pointing that at this point in time humans are the fittest of all animals.

Aging is degradation, regardless of where it happens. The things you speak of can be experienced without actually aging. I'm not saying you shouldn't want this, I just don't find your argument to be very compelling. I almost feels as if you misunderstand what Disco Cat and I are saying.
