Turtles don't age

I thought that was interesting. They reach maturity and then they perpetuate in their prime until disease, accident, or a predator overtakes them. Their organs do not break down over time.

I'm sure this is possible for humans too, and I might see it in my lifetime. Here's an interesting fact: humans can regrow basically any part of their body, just like some lizards do. But this ability of our goes dormant by the time of birth. Scientists are looking for ways to reignite this ability, and currently some regrowth of fingers and such has been stimulated by an enzyme extracted form a pig bladder (however, this enzyme exists in all animals).

I believe that the ability to regenerate in full is within us, merely dormant. I think that with understanding we can get this proccess rolling. Regardless, it's all very interesting.

Since we're almost void of any significant predators, and with technology like that I'm sure our hold on diseases would be amazing too, overpopulation would be ridiculous. There would be all sorts of laws about how much sex you can have, how many kids you can have, and all that. It'd be like some Ender's Game type shit.

I agree with him. What is life without the threat of death.

I dont think this would make the world a better place. Only spin it more in the direction of that movie "Idiocracy"

Life without the threat of death is better life. Whatever mindset that would make someone need death in the picture to envigorate themselves is also a part of death. Remove that mindset, remove death, and things are as they should be.

This is all interesting and good and all but nature will win in the end. Some horrific disease will wipe out a significant portion of the population so I say let them try and live forever.

You don't need to be to not choosingly walk into it. You could walk off a cliff or shoot your brains out at any second if you so choose. Does the fact that you're not doing these things mean that you're afraid of death, or that you understand life to be the better choice? Same thing with regeneratice medicine. It's based on the bodies natural ability to regrow, it merely seeks to unlock that ability.

Reject death > Reject life.

I utterly disagree. Being alive is about being born, living, and dying. We live for, hopefully, a century, and then it's over. You wouldn't want to live forever. The right to die is something we need to reclaim from our governments.

Being alive is not about dying, dying is about dying. Death is not a part of life, they're polar opposites. What you mean to say is that you're just accustomed to thinking that every life ends with death. That life ends with death speaks for itself, that death is not a part of life.
Contradicting the view that death is an equal part of life is the examples of the aforementioned potentially enternal turtles.
Death is a misfortune, as is aging. Arguing that it is meant to be is rationalizing due to accustomization.

Personally, I actually would want to live forever. If life gets boring or unexciting, that's your own fault. Living forever, a person could bring a lot of perfection and teaching to a chaotic world, which would only make it better to be alive in the future.

The right to die is always going to be yours, but so is the right to live, if you can manage it.

OK, so things live, and die, that's what we're used to. But if things could live, and not die - is it worse just because its not what we think of as 'natural'?

Conveniently, the push for for space exploration, colonies, etc. is pretty strong right now.



Other "natural" things that are less than optimal:
Cancer
Getting eaten by polar bears and/or cannibals
Ingrown hairs


The bible writes about people who lives for almost 1000 years. Since it's biologically possible to do, according to the turtles, maybe those descriptions were portraying the truth - regardless of the theological tie-ins, whatever your thoughts on those are.
I think it's especially probable considering that humans have the ability to regrow pretty much any part of their body, it's just that the ability is dormant in us. In all likeliness, people probably used to live exceedingly long in the past... actually I think that has to be true, because the dormant ability in us would only be there if it were previously active at one point or another.

In conclusion I'd like to state that it's death that's the freak of nature, not perpetual life.

It's impossible not to be afraid of death. You can laugh in the face of death and be extreme with your life, but past history has shown that it will shorten your life significantly.

I think we need to come to terms with the fact that death is imminant and a natural part of life. I am sure there comes time in many elderly's lives that they think of death as peace, therefore they are no longer afraid of it. It's the aging process, and the mind is in control of it all. The older you get, the more at peace you become with life and death(hopefully). The longer we live, the more we come to terms with taking the world as it is and the more we are able to keep order. If we take away the idea of death, I don't think we would accomplish more. I think it would be more chaotic than it already is.

I love talking to interesting elders. Their stories are fascinating, and the ones with strong characters are amazing people. Hopefully this country will learn to treat them better, because with any luck, we will be one of them one day. I don't want to live forever. Just until I'm old.
