Well my friend who was loaning me a blender flaked out, but made sure to keep me hanging until all the stores closed so that I would be completely screwed. I've got a strict time schedule to work on and I'm an adamant son of a bitch so I started chopping up all of the cactus, and tried grinding them by hand with a cheese grader.. Well it wasn't before long that my hands were red and swollen and my wrists hurt like hell.

At this point I decided to slice and dice the cactus into pieces as small as I could. It took forever but it's now been on the stove cooking for about an hour. What I'm figuring on doing at this point is cooking for 3 more hours and straining, then putting it all in the fridge for the night. Tomorrow morning I will go and buy a cheap blender, come home, blend the remaining sludge, boil for perhaps 2 more hours, strain, combine strains and boil down to a drinkable amount.

Does this sound like a decent plan worthy of success? Any suggestions or comments are welcome. Please keep novice speculation to a minimum. I also understand this thread may not be replied to in the time I need, but hey, I gotta give it a shot.

edit: Also, will squeezing a lemon into the mix aid in the breakdown of the alkaloids? I've read about this and it sounds rather inconclusive but I'm willing to do anything I can.

Yes to all your questions. And wear gloves if you plan on handling a lot of the raw cactus for awhile, alkaloids are basic and can be kind of harsh in an accumulative fashion.

As for a blender, pick up one of these. The all metal drive system looks nice. Most of them use a rubberized plastic of some kind. That's exactly where/how mine broke after much san pedro abuse. :laugh:

Thanks for the reply, put me at ease.  It seems this preparation is very forgiving and hard to screw up, but deviating from the norm has made me a little nervous.

I'll be confined to whatever blender I can find at k-mart, but I'll probably only get a couple uses out of it anyway before I trash it and move.

I'm straining to think of possible problems and more questions while you're online but not much is coming to me :shrug: I'll probably think of something right after you log off haha.

Again, any suggestions are welcome.  Thanks again :thumbup:
