Ok, stupid question no.73 aaannd ACTION!
    #6888357 -

Ok, I'm that kind of guy that gets all ancy and throws away directions, warranty cards etc. because I want stuff to start working right away and deal with problems later

anywho, I have this new external hard drive and what I want to know is there a proper way to shut it down before unplugging it......not just unplugging it from the computer but from the wall too

or don't I even have to care and just do it?

if you're running Windows you should see a little green arrow icon in the system tray by the clock, when you mouse over it it should say Safely Remove Hardware. Double click on it and a menu will open with some of the devices you have plugged in, choose the storage devicce (whatever it's called) and click Stop. It should then tell you it's safe to remove it.

if you're running Mac all you need to do is the equivalent of right-click on the drive icon and click Eject. lol..

sometimes my computer won't let me eject it properly and I'm not completely sure why. you have to make sure you have no documents on it open and whatnot.

unplugging without ejecting threatens crashing.

You can also eject it from the finder on a mac... click the little "eject arrow" next to the device name in the finder.
