A question or two post harvest...

Well, thanks to the heap of help from The Shroomery, I've just harvested m first few shrooms from my first cake birthed. Needless to say I'm thrilled and whether I end up enjoying the trip or not I believe I may be hooked on growing! I've got a couple of questions though: 1. Some of the shrooms I picked were only about a half inch or so, but they were mature (meaning the veil had broken). What causes such miniature shrooms? Or have I just built up false expectations from looking at all of the beautiful shrooms in the picture gallery? Is this normal? On the same cake I had a two inch tall one too. 2. Some of my shroomies had hollow stems, what causes this? Does it really effect yield if this happens? Thanks for all the help, BlueGene
Oh, and I'll post some pics as soon as they're developed. My babies are no super stars but they're all mine and damn I'm proud!

I'm not the best person to be telling you this but there are many reasons why these things are happening. Humidity is a factor as is light and air exchange, etc... Don't be fooled by the pictures you see in the gallery because those are grown by seasoned veterans. Just keep working at it.

a coule questions.. where the miniature shroom's stem's skinny or real fat? and some of the stems were hollow? like you picked them and you could see inside the stem? did both of these events happen on the same shrooms or separate ones?

1\2 inch that may be normal, but no good. Try increasing your growing perimeters. Were these produced by cakes? Try thinking outside the cake.

He said "some" of them were small. Not all. A mixture of shroom sizes on any substrate IS normal.
In reply to:
Try increasing your growing perimeters
What does that mean?

I apologize bassplayer you are correct sir, you will always have a couple runts. When I said "increase your growing perimeters" I meant Increasing the nutrient supply i.e. dung, increasing the size of fruting chamber, the air exchange everything. Now I think about it, I was a little out of context.Myself I see alot of people putting fourth more effort on there cakes, than some put on 55 gallon bins. Yes way out of context but maybe something to ponder. -bassplayer what part of TN. u from?

My minny shrooms were short, fat and were hollow about half way up the stem to the cap. They were not hollow from the base up, so I only could see the hollow center when I sliced them in half for drying. The non-fat "normal" looking shrooms were not hollow and had much thinner stems. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled with the results! I mean it's pretty darn amazing to watch these little treasures pop up where there were none before. I can just see that I have much room for improvement... Thanks, BlueGene

Hi,
All shrooms have hollow stems ,this is normal, but on one shroom you can see it better then on another one, so don't worry about that .
And about the minature shrooms, there could be ton of factors why they grow so small, but don't stare your self blind on that, don't worry about that. It happens to the best.
