saving money on spore syringes

i just wanted to share something. I started to use my spore syringes two to three times by letting some spring water boil vigorously for a bit, then ( while it's still boiling) covering the pot tightly w/ foil. That's the harder part. After it cools down ( I haven't really kept track, but if the pot is small, I guess It'll take 2-3hours) I spray lysol everywhere, make sure there are no air currents in the room ( I turn off the air conditioner ), flame the needle, put it into the water, and suck up another 10 mL of H20. It worked the 2nd time really well, but after that it's just luck. the jars colonize slower and some don't get any spores at all after the 2nd use of the syringe, but it's just another thing to try.

Are u talking about diluting a spore syringe here...
I don't think that's a good idea but, like u said, its something to try.
If you want to extend the life of your syringes try the honey tek...

i guess it's diluting...... I 'm more talking about using a syringe, taking that empty syringe and putting some water into it for the purpose of using it over again. What peoblems do you think will happen?

Just fill the used syringes up and wrap them in foil and pc for 15 mins.

That would kill any spores that are in it. I'm trying to get all the spores that may have been left over from the first use of the syringe. i started noticing that some syringes had big clumps in them that didn't get dispensed with the first use .. so I started doing the above mentioned.

(and I dig the bass and drums MUCH more than the rest of the band, so much respect ) I think introducing honey to the equasion is more of a risk than diluting your syringes. I've only done it once or twice, and didn't take half the precautions that Cheesenoonions took, and never had any problems. I actually did it a different way: I took a syringe that was filled with sterile water, and keeping it vertical with the plunger at the top. . . unscrewed the needle out of it. The air pressure kept the water from glugging out. I grabbed a half-used spore syringe and after wiping the needle with an alcohol soaked cotton ball, I "injected" this needle upwards, into the column of sterile water--and sucked out enough water out to top off the used syringe. I've never had any appreciable difference in colonization time between a fresh syringe, or a 50% diluted one.

Hey Dex,
Do you know what the honey tek is? It's a tried and tested and proven way of extending the life of spore syringe. With just a couple cc's of spore solution you can create enough liquid culture to innoculate many many jars.
I think diluting a spore syringe is a terrible idea. You heard his results right?
Here's a qoute from his post:
"the jars colonize slower and some don't get any spores at all"
I would have to agree with that. That seems to be exactly what would happen. I have never diluted a syring so I cannot say for sure it wouldnt work but I do think his results would be the norm.
Besides, I think what he's really talking about is reusing a spore syringe after its been emptied. In which case I would definitely suggest filling the syringes back up with water, putting them in foil and pc for 15 mins. Then you can take those and a print and make new syringes.

What he is doing Bassplayer is basically rinsing out the syringe to get every last little bit of spores out. I am presently trying a simular thing. After I use the syringe I suck up some malt/water. After two days I see something floating in there, will know for sure in a couple days. By using malt/water or kayro or honey I'm only risking the solution. If something grows great if not no big loss. I'll let you know if it works.
Peace, Bob

I tried that once. I innoculated my jars right out of the pressure cooker killing every bit of solution i injected. I saw a small clump in the bottom of the syringe though and refilled it with purified water and reinoculated the jars. Mycelial growth was slow but it happened. DaGeniusE

Listen to Bassplayer he knows. Use the honey tek I do, I`ve only used 1/4 of my print and the rest of my 20 jars have all been innoculated with honey water.
Faster colonisation times and a jar full of mycelium. I keep my jar in the fridge, it`s been there for 3 weeks now and it`s still kicking. Every jar I`ve done has begun colonisation in less than 2 days. I won`t have to make another spore syringe for a while.
And if you do it right there won`t be any problem with honey or exposure to the air. I`m not exactly going to any special measures, I just spray the air with a bleach solution and I`ve not had one contamination yet.
It deffinately extends the life of your syringe. Whereas diluting is just not worth it.

^lol you obviously didn't read one word of this thread. Its not about making new spore syringes its about getting the most out of 1 already filled spore syringe.

do you guys think the tek would work w/ dextrose and H202, I've heard rumors that mycelia in liquid culture (dextrose water anyway) is less potent or less healthy than mycelia grown in agar or in cakes/grain. Plus where do people get agar? A quick search says asian food supplies or health food stores, but what brand name or item would one look for?

Check the yellow pages under chemical supplies or lab supplies. i found a place in my hood under chemical supplies that sells everything we use.

I can tell you now that I`ve had no reduced potency or vigour as far as mycelium went. I make my honey from master cultures and not necessarily from spores. I originally used spores and I still have one jar I did with a 2 month old honey syringe. It grows fast and grows well, very rhizomiphoric. Try using milo or horlicks. All are malt / barley drinks and work very well. Obviously with honey as well. Mycelium needs suger for vigour
