i dont know man, i work as a legal assistant for a midsized insurance/litigation defense firm. i got certified after getting a 4 year BA, i figured i would go to law school while i did the paralegal work, and that would give me a leg up in school and in getting employment after i graduate. there are WAY too many attorneys in the US, like 10 million already, the job market is tough. I still work in the field and I like my job b/c I do the interesting parts of litigation, ei discovery, investigation, some drafting of legal briefs. but after 4 yeasrs in the field, i have definelty decided not to go on to law school. part time it would have taken me 5 years of non stop schooling and put me in 80K in debt on top of my undergrad student loans. plus, i get paid pretty well and dont work much overtime (hope you like 60 hour work weeks, b/c most entry level atty's work them) and after watching the stress levels of the entry level associates at my firm, i feel i can do without a law degree. my career path will probably take me to working special investigations and fraud units for insurance companies, which is what i do a lot of the day anyways.

my advise, if you have a 4 year degree and are interested in lawschool, get your paralegal certificate, should take a year or less, and get a job in the field. then see how much you would really like the legal field.

if you dont have an undergrad education, look forward to 7 years of school and a buttload of debt that may or may not lead you to employment as an attorney.

To get into a decent law school you need a bachelor's with a pretty decent GPA, a high LSAT score, and good extracurricular activities.

I'm taking the LSATs in June and will be enrolling in law school in fall of 2008.

Ya know, everyone bitches and complains about law school and life as a lawyer, but every attorney I know (ALOT) and my wife (finishing up law school) all seem to enjoy what they do. Even through law school my wife hasnt been TOO stressed out (no more than graduate level school should be, although she is highly intelligent) and the attorneys I know, even those just starting, dont work major hours or have high stress lives.

Of course this isnt a huge city, just midsize, but even an entry level attorney that sucks is going to make 6 figures around here, thats just how the market is.

Undergrad GPA and LSATs are the big things with getting into law school, other things may help a little, but if you dont have great marks on those 2 things, then you arent going to law school.

Redstorm, what law schools are you applying too? Good luck on the LSAT! Did you take some prep courses? (highly recommended, and worth every damn penny) Once again, good luck

I haven't applied yet, but I'm going to apply at U. of Texas, Northwestern, U. of Michigan, Georgetown, and a couple other safety school. If I do very well on my LSAT's, I should be able to get a full ride because I have an undergraduate GPA of 3.85.

Please help me in anyway with information, experience, theory's.

Well, did you get a letter stating that there was no more work for you? You should always get something in writing whenever you leave a job.

In any case, when you go to the appeal, make sure they understand that you were hired for local only and the company laid you off when that work dried up. You have to make them understand that you didn't refuse to drive long trips; you started with the express agreement that long trips were not part of your job.

Your ex employer is going to try to say that you were hired for all types of driving and quit by refusing long trips. One way to counter this is by explaining that in all the time you worked there, you were NEVER asked to go on a long trip. This helps to support your claim that the company hired you with the express understanding that they would never assign you long trips.

This is going to be key in winning your claim.

As for law school, generally it starts with a four-year degree in some discipline not necessarily law. THEN, after you have the four-year degree, you go to law school.

So you're either a paper tiger or you're practicing your comedy routine.

Lots and lots of lawyers never step into a courtroom, they get rich in other ways. I know a guy who does international business law consulting- makes big bucks, works when he wants, and has never ever been involved in a criminal case.

Redstorm,

I know this post is old, but did you end up enrolling to law school?

I actually didn't.  While I was applying for law schools I also applied for a few masters programs too.  One of them offered to pay my full tuition and offer me a monthly living stipend while I was in school, so I took that instead.

Most lawyers never see a courtroom and lead a generally boring and tedious life.  Unless you're a star litigator you are the one who actually has to read the billions and billions of documents.  Scutwork.  Mundane, boring and tedious bullshit and woe unto you if you miss something.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. If you put your mind to it anything is possible. Just factor in the shitty job market.
