HPS setup confusion

so say if afoaf wanted to setup a small grow room and bought a 400w hps bulb. Now what kind of ballast or whatever does he need to get the thing running? Also would a standard 120v outlet work?

just some confusion. Im seeing i can buy a ballast 400w hps combo on ebay for 100$

sounds reasonable, so long as it isnt held together with duct tape or anything like that lol

whenever i bought lights in the past they were offered as a combo, but if u are buying the lamp and the ballast separately, u can always check with the retailer to see if they are compatible.

you hook up the light socket to the ballast, this should just be a plug that runs from the socket into a plug on the ballast. Screw in your bulb. Hook the ballast up to a power outlet. You're good to go.

my bulb alone cost more than $100 lol
make sure before firing up your hps when you get it wipe it down with alcohol to get the oils "fingerprints ect.." off the bulb.
also never let water splash it when its hot or it could explode and send glass shrapnal flying

Ive heard this, I do this.


But i was wondering...  Do you think utility workers use gloves and/or wipe down bulbs when they install them?  Locally Ive seen the exact same 250WHPS bulbs that i use, lighting a courthouse, and i really doubt  they were wiped clean of fingerprints.

Here's how it goes. You need a ballast to run the bulbs, The ballast connects to the bulb with a socket set(this is normally included with the ballast). Screw bulb into socket, plug socket cord into ballast, and ballast into wall.

If you had a reflector, you would mount the socket inside the reflector.

  yeah  It will work when the oils heat up at the same time as the bulb and won't be like cold water hitting the hot glass but it still isn't very good.
    sometimes I get gnats that die on my bulb and it hasn't blown up yet.
