I burn gold and use it to fume. You boil it until it vaporizes. Then stick it to the hot glass. Almost like air brushing in a way. Then you reduce and cook it in. Then you let it soak at about 1200 degrees. The gold crystallizes in the glass and refracts light. It's funny how I use quarts rod to fume with.

gold is often found in a matrix of rock know as ore, pure gold known as placer gold is also found, usually in streams and such

I think what he's saying is that the gold atoms are never bonded with anything else, they may be mixed with rock, but the atom itself is pure gold.

I was told that gold on quarts is worth much more then the gold by itself, this is because it is shown in it's natural state of development. I am not positive but i have heard that gold grows on quarts. I am most concerned because gold is an element, the building blocks of everything we know that exists. Elements to my knowledge are the most basic form of matter, and the smallest building block we know of that matter is comprised of. The very first laws of chemistry i have learned is the basic conservation of matter. This law states that matter cannot be created or destroyed. If this is true then how is gold grown or created by mother nature?

I dont have a clue what the hell you are on about.

well im out in nevada, mining country we have some of the biggest gold mines in the world here...

ayhow.... the conditions and pressures that formed gold millions of years ago when the earth was still a hot ball of magma, were very similar to the conditions that caused quartz to form. Often times you will find gold in areas that have lots of quartz in them. (this is all info i got from a local miner in a bar btw, but he was very sure about what he was talking about)

i would imagine that a fotmation of crystal quartz, a very clear form of quartz that is much rarer than usual quartz, infused with gold veins would be worth more than gold because of its novelty....

im heading down to the ol' tradin post today, ill see if they have any for sale that i can take a picture of for ya ...

He is talking the worth of gold on a quartz matrix as a specimen. They are worth a lot to collectors as specimens.

Thank you, thats the overall answer.

When stars run out of hydrogen to fuse in their core they go on to helium etc and so on down the line of elements in the periodic table until they can't support the buildup anymore. Stars with a higher initial mass will get further down the periodic table, but I think all stars stop at iron because it has the most stable nucleus/electron arrangement of all the elements. This causes a runaway reaction, basically a shockwave throughout the star that causes it to explode in a supernova. Somewhere in this shockwave/actual explosion I believe atoms are just shot together at such high speeds that they can form the other elements beyond iron, but I could be wrong about that last part.

Thats pretty much right on...then radioactivity works in the opposite direction...but that has nothing to do with gold.

I know that gold can not be created by man. I don't intend on planting a gold tree and hoping it will grow. Is gold created by mother nature or was it just always there?

Quote:
There's no way to create gold from something else by simple chemical means. However, it could be isolated from a molecule containing gold atoms. Is this even what's being talked about?

My question is if all the gold present here on earth will always be present and always has been? Are we stuck here on earth with a determinate weight of gold that is never ever going to change?

I know that atoms are not the smallest thing out there, however atoms are used to combine together to create new substances and compounds. In order to name them we talk about the number of atoms and the ratio of atoms in a compound or molecule. This is why i call them the building blocks. You can take apart a gold atom, however you cannot use the smaller pieces to create new atoms or change the atom itself. The nucleus of a gold atom will always have and contain the properties of a gold atoms nucleus. Electrons can be shared and ions can be created but the nucleus will never change.

I thought that noble gases light helium, neon, radon, xenon, argon, and krypton have the most stable electronic configuration because the electrons in its outer most shell is full to its max capacity. This is why the formation of compounds with noble gases is virtually impossible through any valence mechanism.

And yes, i am talking about the value to a collector. I have been told that if you find a gold nugget and process it, then the value goes down substantially because collectors will pay more for it in it's natural state. It is the same thing with most gems trapped inside certain stones, untill you find large gem quality stones of course.

Speaking strictly in nature and scientific terms, it is not impossible. It takes massive amounts of energy and fusion to change the configuration of the Noble gases (the sun does it). Us humans cannot do it unless we have a particle accelerator..... usually.

I've known a few good ole boys who paid their houses off with Placer gold they found, just run a sluice in the river.

I got my Whites MXT, try to nugget shoot every once in awhile but i've never found any good gold nuggets.

I've heard every once in awhile of people finding gold ore runnin sandwhiched in quartz.

HighTek: interesting. But what can it change? The nucleus of an Argon atom will always be the same even if electrons are taken away. Or do you mean that somehow it will make it possible to bond with other atoms? Atoms bond to create a more stable configuration, so why would it bond if it is already as stable as it can be?

Thanks for your time, i appreciate the help. I am no chem major but i have a few books and am very interested in chemistry.

Actually gold bonds naturally with mercury i have heard. It is also a common method used to refine your gold flakes. Just add mercury and the gold bonds to it and discards all of the other impurities. The gold and mercury rock up into one clump and then the mercury is burned off carefully and the result is 100% pure 24K gold. So i have been told......

Here in California you can get 22K gold straight from the rivers and bedrock. In Australia you can find pure 24K gold naturally.

You've been told wrong. Gold dissolves in mercury.

Well in any case the method still works to refine your flakes panned from the river. I suppose if the gold were to bond with the mercury it would need to be separated by chemical means. If i am not wrong the boiling of the mercury to leave behind the gold would be distillation, right?

Well, it changes the whole thing. The Sun burns hydrogen...the heat is so intense, the atoms fuse (fusion) to make Helium... Helium and hydrogen bond to make lithium...and so on...

As far as Particle accelerators go, they do just that..then the fire at some molecule to combine them...if you break up the nucleus, then you're talking nuclear energy.

Shit, i totally lost sight of the original post. sorry.

You don't use a metal that dissolves another to "refine" another metal. One doesn't take gold and apply mercury to it if one is interested in having the gold - its like burning a dollar bill.

So you are saying that two elements can combine to form a completely new element under certain conditions? In this case high amounts of heat, and under thees certain conditions it can actually cause a change in the nucleus of the Hydrogen and Helium to create or combine into a different nucleus of a Lithium atom?

This is quite new to me and very interesting. I am quite curious.

The gases being fused inside a star are in a state called a "plasma", where there are no electrons bound to the nucleus. Their valence shells have nothing to do with it.
