Ignorant fools are causing me stress..

How do you deal with closed minded people who are incapable of using reasoning or logic to have a meaningful debate?

I'm sick of hearing "I don't do drugs, I drink."

or

"Marijuana causes cancer."

Ever since I started using psychedelics, I felt it was my duty to help spread the truth about them, because this is really the only way they will even be legalized. I turned on at least a dozen people, who now use pot on a regular basis, and are willing to experiment with other drugs.

However, whenever I can't get through to someone, It causes me major stress and really affects my relationship with the person. I don't care if Joe or Jane are against drugs, but I feel like they should know the truth about them, because it's ignorant fools like them that are responsible for our current drug laws.

Are these people hopeless? Do you guys just keep your knowledge on this issue to yourselves?

You have to treat those people like children... seriously.

Calmly explain the facts as you know it, and make sure you have sources for all the fucktards who think YOU are the one lying! You just have to remain calm and collected...

You could hit them in the face with a truck full of hard evidence and they still wouldn't listen.

Most people won't be told anything. Just like religious nuts, their opinions are infallible, and they are truly incapable of breaking their programming, especially when it comes to something like drugs, because drugs are bad mkay.

Really don't let them stress you out, I don't give them the time of day and you shouldn't either. It's just life, try and keep intelligent company. But don't force your ideas on people either because drugs really aren't for everybody.

the person who I am closest to in this world doesn't share my views on the subject at all but in our case we can't let it get between us like that.  she accepts that I do drugs, but she knows I have my reasons, reasons she may not understand but she does realize that is largely a matter of opinion and that there are more important things to be concerned with.  at the same time I realize I can't open her to what I consider the truth on the subject because she just has an unwavering and differing viewpoint, personal belief, similar to mine.  I don't think of her as ignorant, just stubborn and opinionated - exactly like me :smile:

The trick is to just try to avoid close minded people in general. Why waste your time to convert them when you can be spending it having intelligent arguments with open minded people. Life is just like the TV, you can switch channels if you don't like what you see.

A housemate of mine, bless him, once had the final say in an argument with the immortal line: 'in mansfield (a small town in the more 'traditional' north of england) if we want a good time we go out on a saturday night and have a load of beers, try and pull a bird (woman) and a have a fight.

I was pretty much too outraged to speak, and he has one of those unimpeachably narrow minds, impossibly set in his ways at the tender age of 21 and at a push (accepting this is just the opinion of a drug-addled hippyish fool) has believed everything he has ever been told.

The context of this argument was that he was trying to hold his position against three that shared the view that is undoubtedly de rigeur here at the shroomery - thinking for yourself, a curiosity in experimentation and in due process (!) the idea of rejecting the programs of others and 'the system' in favour of creating your subjective, but thoroughly considered own. Thats my take on it anyway. He became less secure in his position under volley of a variety of well spoken arguments but could not alter his stance, so became desperate. He told us he would call the police if any of us smoked cannabis in our shared dwelling. He told us many other learned platitudes, the kind that make the heartmind of experience want to almost spit with righteous indignation...

but! this is my point. i learnt that evening that the heartmind is best protected from coming to feel like that. It is not worth it's trouble. They are not wrong in their program not to experiment with, i'll say illegal substances, going on the idea of the drinker vs the stoner, wrong as they may be in the reasoning they present to you in antithesis of your argument. Educate those that seek it, not those that you would like to disprove in their trajectories. They are not going to appreciate your efforts and are not going to prove worth the time and trouble you invest in trying to 'enlighten' them.

The sad bit about my housemate is that at any time there might be a girl or two about, that share my or other friend's inclinations, if we are having a night in or something, he will trot out, talking to me, generally, loudly, how he would like to try cannabis, or mushrooms, or anything. When they are not around he will return to form. It really do find it very sad. Saddest of all is that it is activities like that, his (in my view, warped) take on the social dynamic, that hallucinagenics could help open his mind to.

Long story short: All things positive and negative, the 'ignorants' are on the path that best suits them. Do not force yourself into judgement by trying to change them, if they are not receptive.

Can't you be happy that you have realised much more than them?

If people can't be arsed to learn, it is frustrating but its best to just leave those people be. Laugh at the ignorance of their opinions and find someone as open minded as yourself to talk to.

You can try to teach people but many are a lost cause. Many people think if your are trying to teach them that you are attacking their knowledge thus they put up their defenses and won't let you teach them. They are using the their primary brain circuits - the ones that control territory instead of their medium-high evolved brain circuits that control logic.

It's incredible. I stumbled upon it on Netflix and it's by the same guy who did Beavis and Butthead and Office Space. I definitely recommend checking it out.

If you want to avoid the stress just step down as self-appointed pyschedelic missionary and stop trying to force things. You cannot just dump the truth on people and expect them to accept and understand it. The groundwork has to be laid beforehand.

Now if someone approaches you for information on how to improve their life that would be the time because then you have a motivated individual in front of you. Otherwise you are just setting yourself up for frustration.

Absolutely.  You can't force people to agree with you, and there's no real need for them to agree with you. 

Icelander is right; those people aren't doing anything to you.  Your attachment to changing their mind is stressing you out.  You don't have to change their minds; the world will not end just because they are wrong (in your opinion.)
