improving soil conditions
    #6772450 -

I live in the Pacific Northwest, and the soil in my garden bed is quite heavy and not very fertile. It retains moisture for awhile, but when it dries it's a fairly pale colored and looks kind of cakey and cracked. What relatively affordable additives can I encorporate to improve conditions? My compost is crap and not ready to use, and I need the soil ready for planting within a week or two.

Though it might be a bit late right now... look into "Lasagna" or "no dig" gardening. Works wonders for some people with poor soil.

compost, compost, compost. the only way to improve your soil quality. how deep before you hit the water table? if its clay like you will need sand also.

Thanks for your suggestions. The problem with no-dig is that I'd have to buy A LOT of soil, as my garden is quite large. The problem with compost is that I have none- it's just some rotting veggies right now. Would something like peat help?

I'm not sure how deep until I hit the water table. What exactly does that mean?

if you dig, and you find that you have a hole with water in it, you hit the water table. Are you near the coast?

I'm sort of near the coast, my town is on it but I'm on the east side, and up on a hill. I'm guessing the water table is fairly deep and probably not a problem for my garden.

don't waste your money on peat unless you absolutely need to

take that compost pile of yours, build it up to about 3'x3'x3' (cinder blocks, wood frame, whatever), dig 2-6" deep and start adding stuff to it.  Take all your food products that aren't oily or meaty and put them in the pile.  Get a good amount of manures (or already composted manure if you can find it) to add material to the pile.  Maybe add some top-soil if you can get it cheap/free.  Add lawn/leaf clippings, straw, any organic materials.  Try to turn it once a week or so for quick composting, or once a month for passive composting.

build up a few of those, or just one , and in a few months you'll have a few hundred pounds to a few tons of perfect soil
