Agreement
    #6761996 -

If we are liberal and hear a conservative speak (or vice versa) we tend to think, "What a moron, how could they view things in that manner?" This applies to drugs, politics, religion and any other thing.

Someone that thinks the way I do is quite obviously 'cool' and in-the-know. We tend to seek people most like us or most like the way we would like to be. Those that challenge us are more likely to be considered enemies than as potential teachers.

If you agree with this post I will give you a positive rating. :smirk:

I agree we're inclined to "persecute" those who challenge our minds instead of wanting to see what we can learn from all that.

Regarding the positive rating I'd like you to save it for a more appropriate occasion

I agree that those with great differences can be great teachers...even unintentionally. I work with a very fundamentally Christian person. Philosophically we have very little in common, and I have made plain to him where I stand, but we still find common ground. I learn a lot about my own prejudices whenever we have a discussion about spiritual matters...which is 2 or 3 times a week. He has actually gotten near fighting mad at me a few times, but was able to moderate himself. Considering the hard line he takes I am surprised he tolerates me as he is my boss. I often view him as naive, but I have to give him credit for the fact that he is searching for the truth...not my truth....but a truth.

It's very fulfilling to relate to people on a deep level, especially in a world where most people seem to swim in the shallows. We draw people like ourselves to ourselves, or so its been in my experience, because it makes life a lot more fun and I think that's pretty much the point of it all.

Indeed though, much can be learned from seeing through other people's perspectives, and we must not hasten to dismiss them.

Certainly I like to seek out those who understand me. But I sometimes like to take the time to appreciate those with a different point of view. Those who I appreciate the most, however, are those with whom I disagree, but who are able to present their side both intelligently and diplomatically. Diplomacy is a highly underrated skill.

Diplomacy, like etiquette, is the ultimate phoniness. It muddies communication and ads nothing but murk to human to human transactions.

The exception being world politics where stroking the ego of some self-important tyrant you hate gets you what you want as you smile and shake hands and say nice things to him.

Rudeness between people is just as stoopid.

Better to say what you mean, without rudeness, but straight up and directly, IMO.

If that hurts someone's sensibilities, well, that's a condition of their own making.

You have a strange idea of diplomacy. Diplomacy is simply presenting one's ideas in a polite, courteous, and humble manner. It does not muddle communication. On the contrary, it opens up the lines of communication, and breaks down barriers. It is not about stroking the others ego, but rather softening one's own.

You have a strange idea of diplomacy.

From dictionary.com:

3. skill in managing negotiations, handling people, etc., so that there is little or no ill will

If speaking one's mind directly and without sugar coating causes the listener to develop "ill will", then like I said, it is a condition created by the listener, not the speaker.

It's good to me mindful of this when speaking to a world leader who commands a military machine that could cause you grief, but the rest of the time, it's just balony that gets in the way of what you're trying to say.

If we are talking simply of "speaking one's mind," then then it does indeed hamper communication, as it holds back one's emotional disposition towards the other.  However, such emotionalism does not belong in the discussion of ideas.  Diplomacy involves setting aside one's emotional disposition towards someone in order to more effectively present one's ideas.  This does indeed involve softening one's ego, rather than stroking the ego of the other person.

You're using a different definition than the accepted one which is about couching ones meaning so that it doesn't cause "ill will" but still says what you want to say. That's a load of bullshit, IMO. The problem is entirely with the listener who produces ill will within himself at hearing someone's comments, so it's the listener who has the problem, not the speaker who renounces the phonyness of diplomacy.

"Ill will" is an emotional state. To be diplomatic is to set aside such emotions.

And when someone develops ill will as a result of hearing another's comments, who's problem is that?

That would require both parties to be diplomatic (or perhaps Vulcan?), not merely the speaker. If the speaker remains unemotional, and does not attempt to create ill will, yet the listener chooses to become emotional, has the speaker failed in their diplomacy?

The person who develops it, of course. But often, ill will is implicit in the presentation of the comments. When one is able to present one's case with humility and openness, it generate less ill will, and they are less likely to recieve ill will from the other person.

I like to to think of the example of Carl Sagan vs. Richard Dawkins. Both of them have basically the same worldview, but Carl Sagan was diplomatic, humble, and had class. Richard Dawkins has none of these qualities, and thus I'm less inclined to listen to his banter.
