Re: Agreement [Re: Silversoul]

But often, ill will is implicit in the presentation of the comments.

That's mind reading. It's an excuse to justify one's developing ill will.

Oh, and Richard Dawkins was outright rude even though he was right when he spoke to that religious homosexual hypocrite Haggard. But that's not what I'm talking about. I'm specifically talking about a speaker being direct, but not rude, and a listener becoming upset because he didn't like what was said.

That would require both parties to be diplomatic (or perhaps Vulcan?), not merely the speaker. If the speaker remains unemotional, and does not attempt to create ill will, yet the listener chooses to become emotional, has the speaker failed in their diplomacy?

You are correct in that it does require the effort of both parties to work. But in my own experience, I find that if someone else presents their ideas diplomatically, it has a disarming quality which makes me more inclined to respond in the same manner. I don't personally claim to be good at being diplomatic, but I respect that quality in others, and I find that it is the key to opening up pathways of communication.

No, it's context. It's easy to spot attitude in someone's words if you're observant.

Exactly. It detracts from the beef of the conversation because instead of speaking clearly and directly, you have to be conscious and observant of the irrelevant other person's feelings, which unless you're a mind reader, all you can do is guess at.

Better to be direct and if the other guy has a hissy fit, well, that's HIS problem.

It seems unreasonable to base the quality of one's diplomacy on the reactions of others, however. Just as it is unfair to blame the irrationality of the listener on the expression of the speaker.

If someone is diplomatic and the other person still acts irrationally, I don't blame it on the person diplomatic, and it certainly doesn't detract from the virtue of diplomacy.

So you avoid creating ill will, but it's not your fault if someone brings their own?

I agree with Diploid that most diplomats seem to be full of shit.  I'd rather discuss the issues with Bubba the janitor than a well-trained manipulator.

Taking about reading people. Diplomatic speakers usually seem like phonies to me. I keep feeling that they are up to no good.

I guess we just have different ideas of what constitutes being diplomatic. I don't see it as being manipulative. I see it as reaching out to the other person with humility and respect.

I really didn't want to, but you went out of your way as the straight man to set up the line, thus creating tension like a musical phrase that needs completion. Just as Judas didn't want to turn in Christ, but someone had to.
