Ideas for the mouse-overs
    #6759245 -

I think we should be able to anchor the mouse-overs on the page.

Issues with scrolling:

1. They jump too many lines when you scroll through posts in them
2. Posts that have scrollbars push the headers (thing at the top with the poster's name and the arrows) off to the side, a little, which fucks up my pace when scrolling through a thread:

You're scrolling through the posts:

And then this happens:

Maybe ALL posts should have a scrollbar--it would just be disabled for the ones that don't need one.

Stop nitpicking everything!

I kind of agree with you on this one, sometimes it's a bitch.

What's that quote?

It goes something like:

"It is only the perpetual checking and re-checking and improving and improving that leads to progress"

?

:cool2: Does anybody know what quote I'm talking about?

The mouse-over feature is one of the best, most advanced features--it makes browsing extremely conveniant! Between it and my "Threads" feature, this is the most advanced forum on the net!

:piratebattle:

Ythan: where'd you find out about the mouse-over feature? Did you design it yourself?

Well you don't have to be a supergenius to come up with something like that. Once I got comfortable with DHTML and Javascript it seemed like a natural extension of board's functionality. I'm sure if you look around you could find implementations of the same idea dating back years before mine. But hey I'm glad you like it.

With that said I'm part of the

camp. People don't realize that their "small simple request" for "just one more thing" might actually require retooling an entire script. Or sometimes it's not even possible. For instance I can't control scrolling speed, that's 100% on the browser side. I can conceive of a script which kicks in when the page is scrolled, gets the new coordinates, and adjusts them to simulate a different scrolling speed. But give me a break. As much as I'm all about improving usability, I'm not going to spend ten hours rewriting a script so that once in a while under specific circumstances a few people can save half a second. Don't forget that all work has an opportunity cost, and for every nitpicky tweak I tackle some other feature gets bumped. The part of your request that would be easy is putting a scroll bar on every preview. But because the preview window is small and contains a lot of text, I made a conscious decision to maximize the amount of usable space and omit the scrollbar when possible. Since I also ran into the same problem as you, where a long post with a scrollbar would disrupt my rythm, I made it so you don't have to click directly on the arrow to cycle through posts. You should be able to click anywhere on the left side of the title to go back, and anywhere on the right side to go forward. Meaning you can leave your cursor in a position where it won't hit the scrollbar, even if there is one. And because this interface might not always be intuitively obvious, I added visual feedback where the arrow lights up whenever your cursor is in the right place, not just directly over the image itself. (This was an enormous pain to get working in IE.) So as you can see I put a lot of thought into this and I designed it as best I could. Sometimes you may not agree with a particular tradeoff I made, such as increasing the space availble for text at the expense of not always having a scrollbar. But I did recognize the issue and implement what I felt was an elegant solution, back when it was still in the development stage. You just don't like my choices apparently.

I totally understand everything you said. I don't know the first thing about web-design, so I have no idea how much of an obstacle some stuff can be. I knew about the fact that you designed the mouse-overs so that you didn't have to actually click the arrow  And personally, I don't care about "clutter" :cool2: Anyway: I don't "not like your choices"--you chose to make "My Threads" :headbanger:--all the rest is just nitpicky stuff--I'll stop nitpicking :cool2:
