Update on Australian mushroom Identification
    #675799 - 06/12/02 09:00 PM (21 years, 9 months ago)

Here is a link of microscans conducted by Workman from sporeworks of the two below mushrooms. No conclusions yet - but a huge thanx to Workman and also Teonan and MJshroomer for there continued help!

The above first two mushrooms have hyaline pleurocystidia shaped varyingly from lageniform to lechyniform and ventricose. If we used Stamets' description, Subaeruginosa does not have lageniform pleurocystidia, and has pigmented brown p.cystidia.
This would mean that if we use Stamets as a guide - NONE of the mushrooms in Melbourne are Subaeruginosa!

Not sure. Cleland was the first to identify Subaeruginosa as having hyaline to brown pigmented pleurocystidia and taking a variety of forms - basically any woodloving psilocybe with pleurocystidia would fall under the species ps.Subaeruginosa.
In 1978 Guzman and Watling examined a variety of Subaeruginosa and noted mainly that this mushroom had four distinst microscopic variations in New South Wales - hence he broke them up into Ps.Australiana, Ps.Eucalypta, Ps.Tasmaniana and Ps.Subaeruginosa.
Chang and Mills published a work in 1992 using spore compatability, isozyme analysis and other measures to conclude that all mushrooms were interrelated as variations of one species - although they conceded that they could not find Guzman's true Subaeruginosa or Australiana.
Buchanan in NZ echoed these results in his studies, although he was unable to locate Ps.Tasmaniana as described by Guzman.
Guzman and co rejected these findings in 1993 - stating that Chang and Mills inability to find his described chocolate p.cystidia mushroom (subs), or a specimen of Australiana demonstrated that they were possibly comparing mushrooms from the same taxon that Guzman had described (such as comparing eucalypta with eucalypta)
Stamets also rejected these findings on the same grounds - and also suggests that the four mushrooms described by Guzman are macroscopically different as well as microscopically.
And thats before anyone starts on Melbourne mushrooms!

zhukov - I wish you would find some psilocybes = the photos that you'd take would be great! Ive got those red shits in my garden now - aggressive little pricks, they tend to overrun other mushroom mycelia

hahaha....lol......you wish??!

I know..... if I ever actually find some they'll be the most photographed psilocybes in history, huh

I figured around the south of Campbelltown being rural might yield something, but just masses of these buggers in woodchip beds, as you point out you've got 'em too.....but they are photogenic
