I'm sorry you don't see the beauty of a book that is only as good as the knowledge of the reader.

'here' is dalmatia, in croatia.

Its certainly an emphatic hyperbole, but I dont see why its absurd, or particularly what could even be meant by saying its 'noxiously' so. Its meant in the sense that it strives at encompassing all history, that it can take a lifetime itself hence limiting space for other demanding works, and that its achievment as an extremely experimental work and as literary innovation, does dwarf many other literary works in that regard, to someone who likes avant-garde at least.
I dont see how one could fail to see it couldnt have been meant literally.

Now that is absurd, for it gives simply an insult, and a maximally vague one, to the author, instead of an argument or impression, about a work here discussed. Essentially your boiled down to saying he didnt use enough 'proper' english in it. I dont think this is unfamiliar to participants in the discussion. But so what if he didnt?

Noxiously absurd.

Now that we have gotten rid of the nonsense let me respond to what Joyce said. I am not Irish, I am not Catholic and I do not play cricket. Further, the 2/3rds threshold of understandable English is not high enough. I can do better with Chaucer. If he wrote this book strictly for cricket playing papist mickeys I'm sure it's a work of absolute genius. To them. Not to mention it's historical context, the loss of which rather degrades Alice in Wonderland, Gulliver's Travels, Vanity Fair and all of Dickens as well. Sorry, I am not quite willing to prostrate myself before the altar of the ultimate Irish poseur.

That is the whole of my post, not all of which was in response to your noxious denigration of all other literature. Most of it was in response to the earlier post, before your absurd pronouncement, quoting Joyce himself

Quote:
Here's what Joyce said about reading Finnegans Wake:

"You are not Irish... and the meaning of some passages will perhaps escape you. But you are Catholic, so you will recognize this and that allusion. You don't play cricket; this word may mean nothing to you. But you are a musician, so you will feel at ease in this passage. When my Irish friends come to visit me in Paris, it is not the philosophical subtleties of the book that amuse them, but my recollection of O'Connell's top hat."

I thought I was quite to the point and remain firmly entrenched in my opinion that the man was an insufferable asshole and a poseur to boot. There must be something to the book because it has gathered so many acolytes, but to Mr Joyce's pronouncement that one should spend a lifetime reading his book I say "No thanks, I'll pass. There are better books to read that do not require an immersion in your particularly ridiculous culture."
Target audience: insecure cricket-playing papist Micks. In his own words

It was a celebration of the wake, not a denigration of literature, which I just explained in the ignored post if my initial statement was so suprisingly unclear in intention.

In any case, even if I really meant the hyperbole literally, it would still not be a denigration, i said nothing bad about anything else; it would only be a statement of preference, since I continued to explan how one can read wake continously and would have ones work cut out by this project till the end of ones life - so clearly if one prefered it to other works, one would find it the only one worth reading.
I dont do that btw, though I dont gladly spend my time reading anglosaxon prose much, not significantly presented in the standard historical narrative on literature here as well.
There are many works in history and cultures that are so read continuously and reading them takes up a significant part of ones life - homer in greek culture, or for instance the epic of king gesar - this is nothing bizzare, only its been lost to devouring gross quantities of various literature as well as 'literature' to a point, it seems, that even suggesting anything different is seen as denigration.

as you note, the rest was in response to an earlier post, not mine, so there was no reason to comment - and much less to repeat your entire post.

and this is certainly deliberatively insultive to joyce or anyone who reads him.
So in a civil conversation you managed to say of joyce that hes an 'asshole' (now thats persuasive, and subtile) and (gasp) poseur, and had a few to spare for his readers too. Great going, for a supposed lover if literature.

Oh if this is what you actually concluded that was meant from reading that quote, and not just a wery weak and insultive play of words on your part, no wonder you find nothing of interest in the Wake.

This thread is a beautiful microcosm for the reaction to Finnegan's Wake in the world as a whole. The lovers and the haters....and neither understand the wake fully. Some are interested in the mama mystery of the wake, others are offended by it, but the mystery stands strong!
