What got you started in Philosophy and/or Spirituality?

do you mean as class in college or..??

but i try to evlove and surface my spiritual side. just try to become more spiritual. and i philosophize quite often, whereever i am. in school, while playing ball, silent moments at home, when i get blazed sometimes, and DEF when i shroom. philosophy is very interesting and expands a person's mind very gradually and exponentially. after all
philosphizing is the same thing as wondering, and "Wisdom begins in Wonder"....
all possibilities lie within the mind :wink:

I was unhappy and wanted to know why

then I thought meditation could help.

Drugs peaked my interest in both sectors and in some ways combine the two, which led me to mushrooms and this wonderful bbs.

It's a way of thinking (philosophy I mean) which can help you learn things that science and artistic expression cannot. I'm in no way saying one is better than the other. Instead, I feel it's good to have many tools rather than a few.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

I've always been a philosopher, but I might not have gotten as deep into it if I had never started smoking marijuana.

Well, it all began when I was a teenager, just before and then after I left high school. It wasn't exactly one event, but I recall a few distinct events that started to bring awareness within myself and got me moving down a path. My dad bought a ton of books at a garage sale and I was rummaging through them and found the Handbook to Higher Consciousness by Ken Keyes Jr. I also ordered a book on feng shui that provided a way to get myself consciously working with intention and purpose. Around the time I had started smoking marijuana, and in this time (probably about a span of a year) I got my first job, washing dishes.

Its that time-period that initially got me thinking and started. :grin:

I've always had a natural rebellious and introspective streak.

When I was around 8 years old my friend told me a story about someone on LSD staring at his fingers for 12 hours straight.  My curiosity was piqued.

I have a family member who practices Mahayana Buddhism.  Also generally my parents had tons of books around the house about things like Buddhism, Christianity, human consciousness, technology, UFOs, alternative history.  Reading a really, really broad range of material - from history to political memoirs to poetry to Hunter S. Thompson and J.R.R. Tolkien (both in literary categories of their own) to the works of realized beings - has been one of my greatest assets.

Smoking weed definitely helped.  Like, definitely.

One day on a total inexplicable whim I contacted a friend who had been only an acquiantance (he's a member here at the Shroomery) and asked him if he could recommend one psychedelic drug to try, and a few books about spirituality.  He recommended Huxley's Doors of Perception and Dass's Be Here Now.

Started experimenting with salvia, HBWR, really high doses of cannabis, started "trying" to meditate.  What really did it was my friend bringing home an ounce of shrooms after our first semester away at college: tripping on 4 grams with five of my closest friends in a small strip of forest - on December 21st no less! - was the breakthrough I needed.  No going back to the old way of thinking (well, okay, maybe some, but progressively less and less), and no regrets... :mushroom2:

For myself, it was my father. He always had an interest in the topic. Living with him, I just picked it up inadvertantly. That isn't to say I wouldn't have stumbled acrossed it on my own otherwise. But it certainly was a push.
