Starting to program java

Hey all! As alearning venture (plus after numerous big screw ups at my job based on faulty information and shoddy info passing techniques), I've decided to start programming a corporate intranet. Once I have it finished I'm going to present it to my boss and see if I can't get him to bite... maybe even get a bonus, who knows.

So anyways, I was planning to do the front end with zope/plone... but the back end I wasn't sure about. Then a friend of mine who does a lot of AJAX programming suggested Java as a back end... I started poking around, and it actually seems pretty cool.

Now, can anyone reccomend any good learning materials for java? I'd appreciate it!!

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/ <-- this is the JAVA API it contains EVERY built in class method exception etc etc in the language with very good documentation.

http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/ <-- Sun Java's tutorials, they include everything from beginning to end

Here is the MIT Open Courseware for java.

With these three items in your posession you should be able to go from java programming newbie to java programming pro, I suggust doing a little beginner stuff before hitting the MIT page though as it assumes you already know the logical operands etc.

May I ask what your friend told you made Java ideal for programming this corporate intranet? Is it really going to be necessary for the project? Without knowing very much about the specifications, I think you had the right idea in the first place with zope/plone and I think you should learn python (even though I am not a fan of it, I am recommending it) and work with one of those (likely plone) as they will be quick to deploy, proven stable code, easily extensible, very flexible, and providing many basic to cool and powerful features from the start. That way, you'll be able to show your boss an entire intranet with his content and some admin functions and all that in a fraction of the time and STILL get to learn programming basics. If you need Java later, you'll already have a stronger base of programming experience which will only help.

I was thinking the same thing. Java is insanely complex, compared to other technologies available, when working with the web. There are a few times that Java is really nice, but again, these are very complex scenarios. I would see something such as PHP being a much faster (learning curve) and easier to implement than Java. Don't get me wrong, I love Java as a language; I just don't love it as a language for use with the web (other than applets, which are client side).

Trivia time... what was Java called before Sun renamed it? The correct answer is "oak". Every now and then you still find references in the class code comments that mention "an Java class". This was created by a global search and replace of Oak with Java. It originally read "an Oak class". They forgot to replace the article "an" with "a". I've got some of the original oak source code laying around somewhere.
