ID Request: Hawaii

Habitat: Found growing from compost

Gills: Dark Gray, almost black.

Stem: Whitish, pretty fragile, skinny.

Cap: Whitish with a gold tip

Spore print color: Black

Bruising: Black

Location: Keaau, Hawaii

Given the description and habitat, I would guess that a Coprinellus or Coprinus species is what you have.

HI, the mushroom is Copelandia cyanescens. I picked on Kuaui also. Read my paper on Species Identification of psychoactive mushrooms in Hawaii,

how can you tell for sure?just curious.Copelandia cyanescens is the same as paneaolous cyanescens,right?

it would bruise blue if it is Copelandia cyanescens,IMesh says it bruises black.

I identified it from the shape of the cap of which I am very familiar with, having picked several hundred thousand specimens of Copelandia.

And here is a blue-black stem of Copelandia form Hawaii



and another of Copelandia from Hawaii. The cap is not the same as Panaeolus antillarum which would be the other Hawaiian shroom in Manure throughout the islands. And that does not count the P. sohinctrinus or P. campanulatus which also have different shaped caps.


Copelandia cyanescens and Panaeolus cyanescens are the saem mushroom following two distinct taxonomic pathways .

I agree it is also a blue meanie or Copelandia (cyanescens probably).

Many first time pickers report that their Copelandia bruise the color black. Maybe because when not harvested, handled and dried properly the Copelandia become a dark dark blackish blue color (black with a hint of blue). The black stems become as thin as dental floss once dried and look just "black" to the untrained eye.

In the wild overly mature specimens of Copelandia become this dark blackish color with a hint of blue as they dry and deliquescing (auto-digestion) into nothing. They are still kinda potent when found like this (sun dried) and i will sometimes still harvest these dried specimens for bringing home.

Anyways, nice to see that scan of a Hawaiian Copelandia shroom. Thanks for sharing.

Very cool. Didn't see that pic when I posted, and I went with the safer bet from the description alone. Thanks for showing us that IMesh, you should definitely make a note of that spot and visit it often!

Thanks guys. Some of my friends told me it was an active mushroom but I wanted to get it confirmed by some people who knew what they where talking about.

I picked some copes in Maui, they bruiesed blue, but some spots bruiesed a dark blue almost black, especially the smaller ones, that had the string thin stems once dried, as stated above. You should be able to see some blueing in the cap, no?
