MushBox 3lb bags fell apart: What now?
    #6718916 -

Hello,

I have a close friend who is currently making his first attempt at growing mushrooms. He selected a number of strains, a few syringes of each, and ordered four 3lb rye bags from MushBox.com. After about a week (rush delivery 3-5 days actually means 9) he received the rye bags and syringes and immediately began figuring out what to do for incubation.

He chose a simple tactic: Two tubs: exactly the same. One contains four inches of water, four spacers, and a water heater set to 80*F. The other is placed directly on top of it with a little water surrounding the sides and will contain the inoculated substrate.

Before, during, and after inoculation sterility was kept top priority. Counters and all areas cleaned with pinesol. Both tubs, were entirely wiped down with 91% Alcohol, then the bags were unwrapped, checked for puncture wounds (the box we received them in had a few smashed corners, so we were skeptical to begin with), and then sterilized with 91% alcohol.

At this point I would like to point out that one of the four 3lb bags seemed to not be vacume packed from the time it was taken out of the box, but since no puncture wounds were visible he decided to inoculate it anyway.

The bags were next placed in the sterilized tub and were then(following the directions from the video on spores101.com) injected with 4-5CC edible culture. After injection, when the needle was removed it seemed the tape that held the self healing injection point split apart (even though the injection point was being held down by a cotton ball soaked with alcohol) and the self healing injection point came with it. This bag is currently with the others and an open hole. On another bag immediately following injection one corner of the tape that holds the injection point came undone all the way to the hole. That tape was pressed down and appears to be holding.

The bags are currently incubating at 80*F (allowing 5 degrees for the mycelium).

Will the holes in the bags lead to contamination? What can my friend do to save his bags? What should he do next? Will they be OK?

Thanks for your help

cant answer all your questions but i just want to let u know that just because your fishtank heater is set to 80 your air temp is probably much cooler. but maybe not. depends on a lot of factors but i thought id let u know that.

Yeah thanks he's been keeping a very close eye on it. He's got a thermometer in the incubation chamber so he can tell what the temp is inside the tub. There's also a few blankets covering it to keep temp in. Right now it's leveling at around 78 but this contraption was just created this evening and he hasn't yet found a base level yet.

cool, yeah jars will collonize at room temp even, just slower. 78 would work just fine. i prefer 80 myself.

Yeah I double checked it, for some reason I think my heater is malfunctioning. The first one we got had a short in it and this one doesn't seem to be doing much for heating the water - it's relatively cool. Still, the chamber is settled at 78 inside so I just tossed another blanket on top (making it number 3).

I am rather concerned about the bag situation. He was as sterile as possible, but two bags possibly punctured out of four (spent about $100 total) is not acceptable. What can I do to improve my chances of getting these bags to turn?

cover the holes with microspore tape(can be bought in the drug store , walmart etc...near the first aid) its a surgical type tape that should cover the hole, i dip mine in alcohol before i cover my inoculation holes on my jars...

Alright, update: Covered holes with micopore tape. The bags were incubating at 83 degrees when I woke up, turned the heater down.

What else should I do to keep from losing a fifty dollar order of mushbags?

I'm not exactly happy with the products of mushbox.com. It seems they fall apart.

There is a forum to specifically address the torn bag issue called:

"Shroomery Sponsors Forum"

Post your problem there, and be nice about what you post...
...but state your facts.

Being polite while being steadfast has usually helped to solve most problems in MY life.

If you think the other bags might have any place where they might rip then slap some micropore tape over those areas to reinforce them. (Couldn't hurt.)

Thanks for the response,

I'm not really trying to complain about the bags: I have a support comment for that.

My concern is with contaminates that were possibly exposed when the bag ripped or air contaminates that got into the incubator and found their way to the open holes in the bags before they were closed with micropore tape. I do not want to mess with getting another bag from the site, I don't have two weeks to wait, so I'm just gonna try and see if I can't get some healthy mycelium going with the current bags.

Is there anything else I should do to increase the possibility of success?

He? My? Which is it?

How about giving the sponsor a chance to make it right if they are indeed at fault instead of airing your dirty laundry publically without informing them?

Alright, my apologies, didn't mean to blindsight the people who sent me faulty product. It wasn't my intention to be a douche or even complain about the bags, I'm simply very frustrated. My concern is not with the faulty duct tape or the company - it is with the possible contaminates that entered during injection. I've kept my comments mostly in line with the questions and concerns I have: so why attack me for expressing my dissatisfaction? I have no doubts they'll right the wrong, I just wanted to know how to fix my problems without making them do so.

Nah, dude...I wasn't flaming you; I was serious.

A ripped bag is most likely going to contaminate.
Other than the micropore tape...praying is the only thing I know of.

Hope you have a better day/week.
