4 or 5 miles on a bike is nothing, as you will soon find out

it's definitely good for the heart (circulation).  I'm sure it works some muscles, but I don't know which ones.  The longest rides I've taken are 25-30 mile rides out of and back into town.

Unfortunately, I haven't had much time to ride lately :frown:

suggestions:  keep your bike well oiled and tuned up at all times and you shouldn't have any problems.  Also invest in (or make) a pair of gloves.  It may take minutes or years, but you will eventually fall over.

Unless you're going to actually be riding dirt trails or mountainous regions (actually in the woods) don't get a mountain bike.  Purchase a road bike.

Support your local bike shop(s), shop around for the best deal and best service, and don't ever buy a cheap ass bike (especially from wal-mart).  A decent good bike will run you around $600-700 before taxes, but if you've got the money, you can go a little higher, but it's really not necessary.

Biking is fun.  Make sure you take care of knee joints and rest them when they hurt.

Get a nice big cushiony seat, so you dont put pressure on your tweener or whatever that thing is called.  Because it can make you impotent if the seat isnt right. lol

thanks for the feed back. a few years back i use to ride everyday for maybe 10-15 miles, but then i became very lazy and gave it up. as for the 600-700 dollars, haHaHA, thats funny. at most i will spend 120.00 on a bike. my budget is pretty low but i wont be doing anything too serious. just jumping on a bike and riding. as for the falling down. i use to bmx and dirt jump in high school so i know what you mean about the gloves. i think i still even have my old fox gloves laying around some where. oh, i also plan on lifting weights as well. this should be a pretty good combo right? ride maybe 5-10 miles a day/ every other day and lift free weights as the same. my goal is to get into much better shape. for the last 5 years i took the path of heavy drinking and lots and lots of drugs and i am only 23. i figure if i stop everything and begin to do this then i should be in much better condition and feel much better as well. thanks for the input

If you're going to be pounding the pavement more than dirt, don't get lightweight aluminum wheels. If you curb hop a lot, you'll turn your back wheel into a potato chip (bend the hell out of it) in no time.

Learning to keep your bike in good repair is a little difficult. There are a lot of strange parts on it that can be annoying to adjust, at best. It is important to learn to do properly, though, otherwise your bike will start to fail, and you'll either have to pay someone out the ass to fix, or you'll give up because the bike will piss you off too much.

The muscle group it works the most is your quads. It works your calves some as well, and many other support muscles, especially when you're standing up off the seat and pushing hard.

Weightlifting and biking is a GREAT combo. Probably two of the best exercises known to man.

you may not want to spend the money, but you would understand...those cheap bikes wear out quickly and have a nasty habit of falling apart and/or parts breaking (literally, people have been severely injured from cheap walmart/toys-r-us bikes falling apart while riding them)

but it is your life, so do whatever

I'm with Demius on this one. I've done a ton of Mountain Biking in my day, and the difference between a cheap bike and a decent one is phenomenal. First off, if you're going to be biking on real mountain paths, I would suggest a bike with a little suspension too. My dad has an old 1984 diamond back, and riding that compared to my Kona Stinky is like a handjob with sandpaper versus sex with Keeley Hazel.
Definitley try to save up some extra cash and splurge on a better bike. It feels like a lot of money to spend, but it's sooo worth it in the end.

I used to ride back in the day. Its lots of fun and a great exercise! Just make sure to get/stay hydrated and to not get a seat that will hurt your nuts....

Awesome exercise. Dammit, I've nearly forgotten how fun biking can be!!!

Just bring an electrolyte drink or protein shake (yup, I'm a nerd) and you'll be good to go for hours. I wish my brother's bike wasn't busted so I could go take it for a spin

i got a cheap bike from an some garage sale. I forget the brand name, but it is a good bike. I ride mainly trails, but for the most part they seem to be on level ground. That was okay last year when I was just getting into it, but I got bored by the end of the summer wanting more of a challenge.

All I can say is I had fun riding about 30miles a week in the summer. As far as getting in shape running/jogging I feel does a better job at that, but what do I know.
