Bicycle help
    #8036234 -

First, as far as I can tell this is the best location for this question, even though its alittle off-topic for the shroomery and more geared toward a cyclist forum, but frankly, its what I feel probably a simple question.

I don't know much about my bike, I picked it up used from a garage sale about three years ago for about 50 bucks. Its an old trek road bike (I think) and has run smoothly for the past two summers. I was living at my parents house last spring and summer and they have a rail to trails program--meaning flat and level trails. Which are fun, as if I felt like riding the whole day I would wind up in philly and could hop onto another trail...although I never did.

But here is my question I cannot change gears on this bike. If I do the chain pops. So it was fine for the flat level riding I was doing last summer, but I'm living in a really hilly area right now and I need to be able to change those gears. So I was wondering what could this be? I want to fix it, but don't know where to start. Anyone have any ideas? I know next to nothing about bikes, but I'm sure I can handle most repairs myself.

Also, any miscellaneous bike maintenance or advice would be very much appreciated, I just really started to get into it as a form of exercise and enjoyment last summer and don't know too much other than how to ride and that its enjoyable.

yo man,i used to cycle a bit.

if the gears skip & jump about whilst pedaling you can adjust the gears on the jockey @ the rear wheel. There should be 2 screws.Move to the smallest cog on the rear wheel and turn the screws till it stays on it without jumping about.

Otherwise you may have a stiff link in your chain, which you can physically feel by flexing each link up & down.

let me know if you need more help.
Enjoy!

the best thing would be to find a bike co-op, there u can take a lesson or even build a bike, adjusting the derailer can be a bit of a hassle
