Yes, it likely could be used and still provide adequate air exchange, but remember, we're talking about degrees of gas exchange here. Almost anything will work, but it might not be optimum. The bigger question here is why run it only sporatically? If you are having problems with extra water collecting, then you've not set something up right. Do you have a cup under you air input to catch excess water? Are the walls of your terrarium colder than the inside air? Is the light too close or strong? There are many reasons that condensation or mist collection can cause problems. I suggest you fix them and run the thing 24/7 rather than run a timer.

I put the glass under the cool mist input hose as suggested on my Sterilite brand 10 gallon plastic storage tub 13.0" wide, 18.0" long and 11.5" high through a 1/4" thick clear plexiglass plate which has 5, 1/4" exhaust holes drilled opposite the input hose end. But I'm still getting a lot of surface moisture after about 2-3 hours of runtime. Still maxes out my hygrometer in 5-10 minutes. (max 95%). Could the 5/8th's ID input be to much for this size container? My inside and wall temps are within 2.0 degrees.

My reason for wanting to use the timer was for concealment. Not quite so in your face. And my wife said it makes to much humidity in the house! Sheeeeeeeeeesh!

I understand the desire for consealment. I think the timer idea will work really. Just as long as you have enough cycles and long enough ones to completely flush out the air.

I'm having the same problem as NCubensis. I was wondering about how much time is enough to completely flush out the air. My chamber reaches top humidity (somewhere around 90%) within about 10-20 minutes. Would more exhaust holes be a good idea, too?

I can implement the timer but do you have any suggestions as to why my humidity gets to 95%+ in 5-10 minutes and surface moisture is excessive in 2-3 hours with my above detailed setup? Smaller input ID? More exhaust holes? Thanks.

I'm setting up and testing my terrarium (20Gal) and it takes me hours to get to 88% RH @ 75 degrees F. Diference may be , besides a larger terrarium, a longer hose. I'm using about 9' of 5/8" ID clear tube laid out in coils to help de-mist. have a by-pass valve at the low point to drain excess water and in case I wanted to bleed off some flow. Tomorrow I'm going to shorten the hose a little maybe and see if RH comes up to 90%. Maybe you guys with the high humidity need more hose? Do you agree Shroomgod? Maybe I should leave well enough alone but I want 90% RH don't I?

NCubensis, there is a big difference between 90 to 100% humidity and liquid water. A high humidity does not necessarily lead to any free standing water. Free standing water comes from either condensation or mist injected in to the terrarium. Once again, I'll repeat this: I recommend the cool mist being run 24/7. Still if you must, a small on burst of say 10 minutes on should flush out the entire terrarium. Whatever you decide, keep in mind that in a tightly packed tray, you'll want to flush out the terrarium about 3 times an hour (which is unfortunately not a possible schedule with most timers).

Maddog, if your humidity is that low, then either (a) you have massive holes allowing dry, fresh air in to your terrarium or (b) you are heating your terrarium either accidently or on purpose. Do not heat your terrarium. Keep the temperatures in the mid to low 70s.

As for everyone, I recommend allowing for some degree of backpressure by keeping the terrarium airtight and making about 5 1/4" in diameter holes for exhaust per hose input. You could probably double or half that and be okay, but that's the number I use.
