To be honest I side with psilocyberin here..

What purpose does defacing your body serve? surely if you wanted to remind yourself of these vows / dates / your spirituality you would have it somewhere where you would be able to see it. A giant cross on your back is almost as cliche as the ace of spades / a heart with mother in it.

Tattoos do not serve any point other than to get yourself noticed, its pure egotistical meaning. What is the point in putting yourself through pain, and defacing your body for your spirituality, surely thats hypocritical in itself. If you were a truely spiritual person you would see above all this egotistical bullshit.

I deduce that this whole tattoo business is all about getting laid. You may say there is meaning behind your tattoos, and there probably this, although the true meaning is nothing more than to look cool.

I swear defacing your body in any way is pure egotism.

It can, but its so rare.

Every other kid has a tattoo these days and 99.9% of the time its just bullshit to get laid.

I know of one woman who has a tattoo that is completely out-of sight that has true meaning, but I've seen and met 100s of people who have them just to look cool about completely meaningless things.

Sure, I see a lot of those tattoos. I also see a lot of tattoos that have very deep and interesting stories. I also see tattoos that may not have a specific meaning, but seems to fit that person's personality. My own tattoos are an expression of my spirituality. They also happen to look cool(at least in my opinion, which is the only one that counts in this case). To express means to display to others, and I feel no need to apologize for my desire to artistically express what is important to me just because it looks cool. If it looked ugly, it would not accurately express that which is beautiful and precious to me.

Though I have many tattoos, and tattoos are a big part of my lifestyle, I agree with most of what you're saying (other than your statement that anyone who gets a tattoo is a douche bag). My tattoos have no symbolic or spiritual meaning, they just look really cool, so I suppose you could say that I get them mostly for vain purposes. I get tattoos for the same reason that I tan, lift weights, style my hair, etc. And there's nothing wrong with that. We all tend to our appearance; if we didn't, we'd all look like cavemen.
