PH too high from oyster shells?

Trying to figure why my casing isn't getting colonized, when the EQ ripped through my birdseed substrate in 10 days. Casing is 50/50 with 20% bird gravel, which is oyster shells ground into sand-sized kernels. Also, anyone know where to get PH soil test kits?

I'm going to have to guess its not your PH level in your casings. I've always had good results w/o oyster and lime. The 2 main reasons for oysters shells is to adjust the PH if any and give the casing some texture for the mycellium to build onto. Also, did you use the 'bird gravel' on the EQs? I wouldn't advise using the gravel that contains sands and such because this can cause sealing of the casing. Just use plain old oyster shells if your going to use them.

I've seen PH tests at a few places including home depot and I believe Lowes. I know for a fact that hydroponic places carry them. If all fails..buy one off the net.

Give us some info...temps..Rh ..how thick is your substrate and casing layer?

Moisture content is most likely the cause of the slow colonization. How long has it been in incubatoion for?

No problems colonizing jars, I'm having trouble with casing. I think I have found the problem though, after initially casing I replaced the entire casing layer because the peat I was using was to powdery and dried out easily, so I got some more spongy peat and made a new 50/50 mix, but I didn't do a good enough job of removing the first casing layer. Now I just dug down in one of the corners and found that although the casing layer (second one) is nice and moist, the remaining residue from the first mix is dry as dust (same texture too, I'll never buy generic hardware store peat again). Anyway I have four fully colonized jars almost ready to go (day 11) again, so I'll be able to start fresh with only the better peat moss.
I do see several pins peeping through the uncolonized surface of the bad casings, though, so not a complete loss.

I think your disturbing the casing more then you really need to. Replacing the casing layer etc is a good invitation to contams and it will slow everything down. Live and learn i guess Hopefull your second casing does well! good luck

Yeah, I know, but I made the change within 24 hours (as soon as I realized it was losing too much H2O) so it was before the mycelium had taken hold. Still, obviously it's a no-no, and I just learned that the hard way.
