would it be best for the oyster shell to be ground up? how would a full oyster shell not ground up affect the ph of a casing? its not like its gonna dissolve? secondly i did not get oyster shell but i did get a bag of shells in general. it is for the bottom of an aquarium. will these be ok or should i take it back?

I had a very similar question and got a great response from blue helix i hope this helps you as much as it helped me.
John, oyster shells can be ground to chips or much finer to flour. Oyster shell flour should feel almost like flour or corn meal. Oyster shell chips feel like small pebbles. Although there is no difference chemically--they are the same stuff--the reactivity of the two is totally different. The flour, which is much finer, will tend to raise pH much more rapidly while the oyster shell pieces won't hardly do anything but provide a good texture. That is because calcium carbonate is almost insoluable and it's ability to disolve is in proportion to its surface area.
These online products will cover both bases at the same time:
http://store.yahoo.com/rosecare1/feo11.html http://www.groworganic.com/item_F018_OysterShellLime7LbBox.html
If you buy them, use it in replacement and pick some amount closer to the flour. I would recommend somewhere 2 cups. The key is that it won't really matter too much since adding too much calcium carbonate isn't really a problem. Adding too much hydrated lime, in comparison, kills everything which is why I wouldn't recommend it unless you have an accurate, sensitive pH probe (about $50 cheapest online) to guide you.

Good company to buy oyster shell from BP, but here is a much better product from the same:
http://www.groworganic.com/item_F1850_OysterShellLime50Lb.html
You want the oyster shell lime, which is only $6.95 for a 50# bag. It will cost you about $25.00 to ship, but it's definitely worth it.

It is...And that was my thread
Hydrated lime helps give it a jump start and makes the Ph of the Peat get baser quicker...Whereas oyster (calcium carbonate) lasts longer, to help keep the peat at 7.5 for several flushes
You can probably find it at a nursery, perhaps lowe's even....

hey, check out the 50/50 casing tek here and read blue helix's posts at the bottom he explains why you
should not use hydrated lime. i know lots of people do use it and have
lots of success but since it seems as though you haven't tried this tek
before it seems advisable for you to follow blue helix's recommendations

I forgot to take into account your physical address. I'm in Colorado, so shipping is a little cheaper for me.
