Oyster shells too gritty?

So my friend bought some crushed oyster shells, but they are not powdered - they are very gritty. Would this be a problem when using for the 50/50+ casing?

Also, every now and then some sun flower seeds were found but picked out. If a few sunflower seeds managed to find their way into the casing will this lead to future contams?

Um, what kind of casing material would have sunflower seeds? None that I know of. The gritty oyster shells are great for texture. They won't do anything for pH control though, so you still need to get some lime or oyster shell flour.

Yeah, the sunflower seeds came in the gritty oyster shells - I'm sure my friend missed a couple of them while adding the shells to the mix so I hope they don't lead to contams.

My friend used this recipe:

# 15 1/2 cups vermiculite
# 15 1/2 cups peat moss
# 4 1/2 cups crushed oyster shell
# 1.2 cups of hydrated lime

Would the 1.2 cups of hydrated lime compensate for the gritty crushed oyster shells or should he add more?

Adding too much lime can burn the whole batch.

Testing pH is the way to go. You want an initial pH of around 8 for casing material. Cut the lime back to 1/4 cup and you should be good to go if you can't afford a tester. For peat based casing mixes, one teaspoon of hydrated lime per cup of peat works out about right. You don't count the verm when figuring the amount of lime. Be sure to mix the dry peat and dry lime before adding moisture, otherwise it doesn't mix well, creating dead zones.
