OYSTER SHELL -AG- LIME--???
    #1309712 - 02/15/03 09:46 AM (21 years, 5 days ago)

Hello I am about to do the 50/50 PLUS casing mix. Peatmoss, Vermiculate, Oyster Shell and Horticultural Lime. THe TEK on this site said that you could subsitute the LIME for Calicium Carbonate. Well...I bought some Bandini brand, Oyster Shell AG Lime. It contains 36% Calcium and 92% Calcium Carbonate Equivalent. Will this do the trick to alter my pH or do I need the LIME? Or do I need a different Oyster Shell???

thanks

I don't want to fuck things up

Calcium carbonate is the same thing as lime.

The mixture you have sounds perfect.

OK awesome - the TEK however is built on the fact that the oyster they are using doesn't have calcium in it, you have to add calcium or lime to the mixture. How should I go about mixing the oyster with the peat moss and the vermiculate? What is safe to add pH wise?

thansk

Oyster shells are composed mainly of caclium carbonate. The difference is that the oyster shells are coarse compared to the calcium carbonate(=horticultural limestone powder) and thus don?t have the immediate action in changing the pH.
