If no lime/calcium carbonate, can you still use crushed oyster shell?
    #4395764 - 07/12/05 02:23 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Say you aren't going to use lime/c.carbonate in the 50/50 mix because none is available.

Will adding just the crushed oyster shell still be helpful?

Down the road, but won't really do anything to get the ph right, now. Oyster shell is not very water soluble so it is used overtime. It's a long term buffer agent to counteract the build up of mycelium waste. Really won't be used untill you hit your third flush. You really need to find something to get the ph of the peat to an acceptable level for your shrooms, now.

What could be used? I am worried because I don't want to burn the mycelium, and I hear that lime can do that. Where can I get calcium carbonate?

i can't find anything either. i was considering just crushing up chalk - i've got boxes of sidewalk chalk. as far as i know, it's pure calcium carbonate.

could someone confirm this?

wow! yeah if so, I have plenty of that. Where do you all get your calcium carbonate from? I'm calling all over and can't find any.

Some commonly used forms of CaCO3

1. Chaulk
2. Limestone Flour
3. Limestone Grit
4. Marl
5. Oyster Shell

some are more desirable then others. Again, oyster shell should not be used as the sole buffering agent.

Hope this helped.

that is Hydrated lime...you can get that at any garden center.

You can pick up white chalk too...rather than colored.

No, actually I can't lol...

The only place I've found here in Phoenix, Arizona is ACE hardware, which sells hydrated lime to "raise the soil Ph". However, I'm not sure that it's "horticultural" hydrated lime as this tek says..

http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7977

It specifically says the bag has to say horticultural hydrated lime or the mycelium will be burned up. How do I know for sure?

Can I just buy some white chalk and grind it up I guess?

I think if you further crush the oyster shell down to a fine powder it will do a much better job of buffering.

Okay im so confused now.

Just to reiterate, i have crushed oyster shell. However, this cannot be used alone, as it only does half the job. The oyster buffers longterm, the calcium carbonate does an instant buffer right away to get you started unitl the oyster kicks in.

I can't find any anywhere.

okay cool...so crushed oyster shell and ground white chalk (calcium carbonate)

So one last question...

what amounts do I use: peat, verm, oyster, and ground chalk

is this okay?

* 15 1/2 cups vermiculite
* 15 1/2 cups peat moss
* 4 1/2 cups crushed oyster shell
* 1.2 cups of ground white chalk
* 15 cups of distilled water (1 cup short of a gallon of bottled water) 16 cups = 1 gallon

that recipy that you have listed is a hell of alot of casing material.

hope you have alot of casings.

I'd cut it down to what you need.

I thought that chalk was calcium bicarbonate. Is it? I am not sure if there's a difference though.

CHALK is calcium carbonate.

BLACKBOARD chalk is gypsum (calcium sulfate).

Some blackboard chalk has other stuff in it.
I have found calcium carbonate and vermiculite on ebay. Still none in my gardening centres, is it used for other purposes? like building?
I have seen verm in the BBQ section too, twice the price than the gardening verm in the same shop!, the shops has phosphoric acid in 3 different sections with prices in one section twice what it is in the other for the same amount.
