Oyster Shells and Granite???
    #1010361 - 10/31/02 03:49 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Can't find pure oyster shells anywhere for the 50/50+ casing, but did find bird meal that contains Granite and oyster shells as the only ingredients. Would this work for my casing, or will the granite interfere with the grow??? Please help.

It shouldn't be a problem. The only reason oyster shell is added is to provide the fruits with some stability so they can grow big without falling over.

Try your local aquarium shop or even pet shop (if it has fish supplies)

I called about 6 pet stores, and went to a feed store, no one had pure oyster shells, but some had similar calcium enriched products for birds. Thanks for the info about the cacium vitamins from walmart, didn't think of that. But now I'm wondering if the granite and oyster shells will be better b/c in the 50/50+ tek they say use chunky oyster shells to grow even bigger shrooms, any more suggestions...

Oyster shell gives the casing layer 2 things.
1. anchorage for your shrooms
2. reduction in acidity caused by peat.

It is sold in bags and looks like oats only slightly finner.(1mm sq)

It was my understanding that the lime took care of the acid. I guess that the oyster shell could do it as well.
